It is red, round and a great honour to win. Just six months on from the world premiere of the Setra ComfortClass 500, the new generation of touring coach from Daimler AG’s Ulm-based brand has been distinguished with the internationally recognised “red dot award: product design 2013”.

The design of the new buses, assessed by a jury of representatives from all over the world, prevailed against some tough competition. All in all, 4600 entries from 54 countries, in 19 different categories, were evaluated. The jury of 37 experts explained its choice of winner as follows: “The design of this touring coach is absolutely trendsetting. It conveys a sense of innovation, safety and comfort and thus meets in full the expectations that passengers have of a modern touring coach.” Professor Dr Peter Zec, the initiator of the competition, is quite certain of one thing: “Those creations that pass critical review by the international red dot jury will never become submerged in the mass and will be sure to make their mark in the global competitive field.”And it is, not least, for this reason that Mathias Lenz is particularly proud of the trophy. The Head of Design for Daimler Buses is delighted to find that the positive reaction of customers to the innovative new model series is shared by respected design experts. “The award is an acknowledgement of our daily efforts to make the design of our buses a brand characteristic that gives visual form to the values of the Setra brand within the bus industry, arousing emotions and meeting in full the high expectations of bus operators.”

New front end and sweeping side line characterise ComfortClass 500
A typical feature of the ComfortClass 500 is the gentle rise and fall of the line that sweeps right round the completely redesigned vehicle, highlighted by a new decorative element. Particularly distinctive is the long slope of the roof at the front plus the markedly more pronounced curve of the windscreen. The design of the front end and of the redesigned exterior mirrors has been optimised in countless hours of testing in the wind tunnel. Thanks to these measures, together with the new aerodynamic rear end and further specific measures, the ComfortClass 500 achieves a drag coefficient of 0.33, a figure that would previously have been considered unattainable.

Coveted seal of quality: the red dot design award
The presentation of the award to Setra Buses will take place at a gala event in the Aalto theatre in the German city of Essen on 1 July. With its red dot design award, the Design Centre North Rhine-Westphalia has created one of the most prestigious competitions in the world. The “red dot” award has become established as one of the most highly sought-after seals of quality for outstanding design. Products honoured with the award remain on display in the “red dot design museum” of the Design Centre North Rhine-Westphalia for at least a year.
