The 2010 DTM championship title will be decided in the final race at Shanghai on 28 November. In the 10th and penultimate round at Adria, Italy, Gary Paffett (Salzgitter AMG Mercedes C-Class) was the best Mercedes-Benz driver in second place ahead of Bruno Spengler (Mercedes-Benz Bank AMG C-Class) whilst overall leader Paul Di Resta (AMG Mercedes C-Class) ended up ninth without points.

Thus, Bruno Spengler regained the top spot with now 66 points ahead of Paul Di Resta (63 points) and Gary Paffett (57 points). The winner of the final race will score 10 points. The race at Adria was interrupted after the opening lap following an accident of Alexandre Prémat (Audi) for about 25 minutes. Because of the 75min time limit in the sporting regulations, the race was finished after 38 instead of the scheduled 59 laps. After eight Mercedes-Benz wins in nine races so far, seven of them in a row, Timo Scheider (Audi) took victory today.

Salzgitter/Mercedes-Benz Bank AMG with Spengler/Paffett had won the team ranking already at Hockenheim two weeks ago; they have now 123 points. Maro Engel (GQ AMG Mercedes C-Class) ended up seventh and scored points for the second time this year. David Coulthard (Deutsche Post AMG Mercedes C-Class) who ran in seventh place early on came home 10th and missed his first championship points by less than six seconds. Ralf Schumacher (Laureus AMG Mercedes C-Class) finished 12th ahead of Jamie Green (Junge Sterne AMG Mercedes C-Class), CongFu Cheng (stern AMG Mercedes C-Class) and Susie Stoddart (TV Spielfilm AMG Mercedes C-Class).

The start: Gary Paffett and Bruno Spengler started from an all Mercedes-Benz front row whilst Jamie Green had qualified fourth and Paul Di Resta sixth. On a drying track, Bruno accelerated into an immediate lead ahead of Gary; Jamie improved to third. Paul Di Resta spun off the track after a being pushed by Mike Rockenfeller (Audi). Alexandre Prémat’s Audi flipped over several times at the beginning of the second lap and the race was red-flagged. – It was re-started after about 25 minutes with Bruno Spengler leading ahead of Gary Paffett and Jamie Green. Paul Di Resta’s car could be provisionally repaired and he started from the back of the field.
Lap 6: Paul Di Resta overtook Mike Rockenfeller and was 15th. Jamie Green maintained third place against Mattias Ekström (Audi). One lap later, Paul was 13th. Lap 9: Tough fight between Ralf Schumacher and Maro Engel.
Lap 10: Bruno Spengler held the lead with less than a second ahead of Gary Paffett. Jamie Green was third and David Coulthard eighth. Paul Di Resta had improved to 11th. Lap 13: Jamie Green struggled with fading tyres and dropped to sixth place.
Lap 15: David Coulthard overtook Martin Tomczyk (Audi) and Jamie Green and improved to seventh. Paul Di Resta followed in 10th place. Lap 16: Jamie Green (eighth) and Paul Di Resta (10th) pitted for the first time. Paul Di Resta had a short off at the pit-lane entry and lost one position to Miguel Molina (Audi).
Lap 17: David Coulthard (seventh) and CongFu Cheng (ninth) came in; so did Ralf Schumacher (14th). Maro Engel (sixth) pitted one lap later. Lap 19: Susie Stoddart (10th) drove into the pits; Gary Paffett spun and dropped to third place.
Lap 20: Bruno Spengler pitted from the lead followed by Gary Paffett (second) on lap 21. Lap 25: Second pitstops by Maro Engel (seventh) and Jamie Green (10th). CongFu Cheng (11th) pitted on lap 26.
Lap 27: Paul Di Resta (seventh) came into the pits. Lap 28: Pitstops by David Coulthard (ninth), Ralf Schumacher (11th) and Susie Stoddart (12th).
Lap 30: Bruno Spengler pitted from second place. Lap 31: Paul Di Resta and Miguel Molina collided. Gary Paffett (second) came in for his second stop.
Lap 33: All drivers had completed their pit stops. Gary Paffett was second ahead of Bruno Spengler; Timo Scheider (Audi) held the lead. Finish (lap 38): Gary Paffett finished second ahead of Bruno Spengler; Timo Scheider won the race.

Gary Paffett (Salzgitter AMG Mercedes C-Class) second: “We knew it would be difficult in these conditions. The track was slippery and then my rear tyres faded. Moreover, I made a mistake and spun. However, I’m still in the title race – let’s wait and see what will happen in Shanghai; everything is open.”

Bruno Spengler (Mercedes-Benz Bank AMG C-Class): third: “My start was great and I took the lead. Later, my rear tyres didn’t work so well anymore and I was sliding a lot. Only after my second pit stop the situation improved. I thank my team for a great job in difficult conditions. I look forward to a great finale in Shanghai.”

Maro Engel (GQ AMG Mercedes C-Class) seventh: “I am happy with seventh place and I am happy that Alexandre Prémat is ok. I came out of the corner a lot faster than him and then he crossed my line and spun off.”

Paul Di Resta (AMG Mercedes C-Class) ninth: “I am disappointed. It could have been a good race, but I dropped back again and again caused by some incidents. It was a crazy race with good opportunities for me, but now I am leaving with empty hands. But everything is possible in Shanghai.”

David Coulthard (Deutsche Post AMG Mercedes C-Class) 10th: “A race with many incidents, but I am happy that I was able to fight with the others today instead of just following them. Unfortunately, I made a few small mistakes which prevented me from scoring points today.”

Ralf Schumacher (Laureus AMG Mercedes C-Class) 12th: „Our team did a great job again. Unfortunately, I was sliding a lot with my first set of tyres, so I lost the race already in the opening stages.”

Jamie Green (Junge Sterne AMG Mercedes C-Class) 13th: “The beginning was good and the fight with Mattias Ekström was a lot of fun. Then I lacked grip more and more and was not able to fight back, so I lost one position after the other.”

CongFu Cheng (stern AMG Mercedes C-Class) 14th: “I had a good beginning, but then I lacked grip. However, I am happy that I was able to finish the race.”

Susie Stoddart (TV-Spielfilm AMG Mercedes C-Class) 15th: “Not a good race for me. It was difficult to keep the car on the track and I am not satisfied today.”

Norbert Haug, Vice President Mercedes-Benz Motorsport: “Fortunately, Alexandre Prémat’s accident didn’t have any serious consequences and rightly the cars’ safety always had top priority in the DTM – today you could see how important and right this is. The championship will remain open until the finale at Shanghai and Bruno, Paul and Gary can all clinch the title – that will be a great finale of a great season. Congratulations to Timo Scheider and Audi on a well-deserved victory.”
