In addition to the E 350 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY Cabriolet with spray-guided combustion, we drove at Majorca as an alternative engine, the E 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Cabriolet – A dream in Indigolithblau.
The 2.2 liters four-cylinder diesel engine delivers, 150 kW (204 hp) and 500 Nm of torque. With help of the two-stage turbo charging, we could not detect any notable turbo lag. Our E 250 CDI Cabriolet is equipped with the optional 5-speed automatic. For the acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h, we need approximately 9 seconds. The combustion noise is on a generally very low level. During the test drive – with closed roof – we hear only a slight and minimal combustion noise, which could not really interpreted as a typical diesel noise. With open roof, the wind noise dominated rather than the engine. So we could drive very relaxed on the streets auf Majorca.
With the help of the optional speed-sensitive power steering, was the wild ride through the city traffic of Palma and the winding roads in the surrounding area, easy to made. The good driving comfort, was supported by the Agility Control suspension, which is standard inside the new E-Class Cabriolet. The shock absorbers adapt to the current driving situation automatically. When you drives straight-ahead and when the shock absorber impulses are low, the damping forces are lower, making for more comfortable driving characteristics. But when you cornering at speed or performing evasive manoeuvres, with more body roll, the damping forces are raised to the maximum. The core components of the AGILITY CONTROL shock absorber system is a bypass channel in the shock absorber’s piston pin and a control piston moving within a separate oil chamber. When linear travel of the shock absorber is low, the control piston forces oil through the bypass channel to produce a smaller damping force at the actual damper valve. If the excitation of the shock absorber is greater, the control piston moves to its limit position so that oil ceases flowing through the bypass channel, meaning that the full damping force is available. Also positive on driving, was the by around 30 percent better torsional stiffness.
Our E 250 CDI was equipped with nappa leather in black/alpaca grey. Also in black nappa lether with decorative stitching, was the top of the dashboard.
Our test vehicle was equipped with the seat climate, which consists four ventilators in the seat cushion and in the backrest extract. The fan got air from the bottom area of the interior and distribute them over the seat. If you use the seat ventilation together with the seat heating, like we have done it on our test drive, you got a better and evenly more distributed warm climate over the seat. Especially, in conjunction with the “Airscarf” system, you has a nice warm feeling. This helps to drive with open roof at cold temperatures.
Standard inside the new E-Class Cabriolet is the 2-zone automatic climate control “Thermatic”. Our test vehicle was equipped with the optional 3-zone luxury automatic climate control “Thermotronic”. Both air-conditioning systems offer high efficiency, easy operation and low noise and fast response. The Thermotronic in our vehicle, convinced us completely. With open roof and low temperatures of only 10 degrees Celsius, a comfortable heat was available. The luxury automatic climate control has an automatic temperature control via solar sun sensor to regulate the ventilation rate and the temperature. For driver and passenger exists the opportunity to regulate the temperature separately. Rear passengers can adjust temperature and air flow through a separate operating unit including a digital display in the rear.
For more climatic comfort, provides the luxury automatic climate control “Thermotronic”, three automatic programs called Diffuse, Focus, and Medium. When we use the “Diffuse” program setting, we noticed especially in conjunction with open roof a difference. This program setting reduces the air flow for the interior and distributed the air through some more air vents. In this case we had to select a high temperature setting, to feel warm enough. Use we the other two program, we had no need for more heat. Quite the contrary. Choose we a high temperature setting at the climate control panel, it was rather too warm.
The list of optional extras for the E-Class Cabriolet includes 63 items. One of the most expensive options is the COMAND APS multimedia system with 17.8 centimeter color display and fast hard drive navigation including voice control Linguatronic and 6 GB Music Register. In our E 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Cabriolet was the extended version with 6-disc DVD changer installed. In conjunction with the Harman Kardon Logic7 surround sound system with Dolby Digital 5.1, you can enjoy – open or with closed softop roof – best music entertainment. The surround sound system consists of 12 speakers: a tweeter in each mirror triangle, combined woofers/mid-range speakers in the doors, woofers/mid-range speakers in the rear side panels, tweeters at beltline height, a center speaker in the middle of the dashbord, a surround speakers behind each rear head restraint and a sub-woofer between the two rear seats. Also installed is an additional amplifier with 450 watts.
