The new E-Class Cabriolet. Open driving pleasure for four people. We did in the mountains around Andratx on the beautiful holiday island of Majorca, an extensively testdrive with the brand new E 350 CGI BlueEFFICIENY Cabriolet in the color “diamond white”.

The E 350 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY Cabriolet is powered by the world’s first petrol engine who features spray-guided combustion. The 3498 cc six-cylinder powerplant develops 215 kW (292 hp) and provides a peak torque of 365 Nm from between 3000 to 5100 rpm. These performance facts guaranters driving fun in all situations – Promised! We have tried it myself. The 7-speed automatic “7G-Tronic” is standard inside the E 350 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY Cabriolet.

Our test vehicle is equipped with the AMG sports package, and the AGILITY CONTROL sports suspension with speed-sensitive sports steering, which offers a more direct steering ratio. A simply press to the “SPORT” button in the center console and the hydraulic shock absorber are adjusted. So we could move our E 350 CGI Cabriolet very easily through the Mallorcan curvy and sometimes narrow mountain roads around Andratx.

Thanks to the tighter suspension, we were able to ascertain in the corners a lower tendency to understeer. Change into the sport mode, makes the characteristic of the accelerator pedal more spontaneous. The engine reactes faster. Also, the 7G-Tronic switching times are reduced. Powerful acceleration from the curves – with the 255/35 R18 tires on the rear – is not a problem. Only a few times cuts the traction controll the engine power. The perforated AMG brake disc at the front axle, provides a safe deceleration.The vehicle is equipped with AMG front and rear spoiler and side skirts and 18 inch 6-twin-spoke AMG-design alloy rims. This gives the Cabriolet a touch of more dynamism and sportiness.

The interior in leather with the color combination black/natural beige and the AMG 3-spoke design sports steering wheel in nappa leather with shift paddles, could convince us too. Also on board were the fully electrically adjustable seats for the driver and front passenger with memory function.

In this case, the fore/aft position, seat cushion angle, head restraint, steering column can be adjusted by electric motors in addition to the seat height and backrest angle. What’s more, the EASY-ENTRY system is also operated with the assistance of the electric motors: here the head restraint is retracted automatically, before being returned to its programmed original position when the seat is moved back.

Also on bord are the multicontour seats, which allows the driver and front passenger to adapt the contours of the seat to suit their anatomy or personal preferences thanks to inflatable air chambers in the side bolsters of the backrest, in the lumbar region and at the front edge of the seat cushion. The “multicontour seat” was supplemented by the additional seat climate funktion.

The seat highlight is the neck-level heating “Airscarf”, which is integrated into the backrests of the front seats . Adjustable via the control switch on the center console in three stages, functions the system like an invisible scarf, which warms the occupants’ head and neck areas. First time an adjustment wheel pivots the outlet nozzle upwards and downwards by a total of 36 degrees over and above the head restraint height adjustment, meaning that the driver and front passenger can enjoy the unique neck-level heating regardless of how short or tall they are.

Whenever we drove open, Airscarf was turned on. In this case, warm air flowed around neck, and let the quite fresh temperatures from 10 to 13 degrees quickly forgotten. Also pleasant for the open-air feeling, was the newly developed “AirCap” system. If necessary, one push of the Aircap-button and the six centimetres wind deflector net under the windshield, comes out and reduces the wind turbulence in the interior substantially.

Aircap creates a sea of warm air. The warm air flowing into the interior from the heating system, and remains there for much longer as without Aircap. We try this substantially effect severel times and at different speeds. This works similarly, on extremely hot days. This works similar, on extremely hot days. In this case the air conditioning and Aircap allow the passengers to enjoy a pleasantly cool interior, even when the roof is open.

Aircap also consists a draught-stop between the rear seats, which will be automatically extended if you push the Aircap button. But in our opinion this draught-stop has the disadvantage, that you had a much lower visibility in the interior mirror through the rear window. We felt the draught-stop between the rear seats especially disturbing with closed roof. If you want to drive with closed roof for a longer time, you can remove the draught-stop with two bolts at the rear seats.

At the end, we take a look at the softtop roof of the new E-Class Cabriolet. Our E 350 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY was equipped with a black softtop. With the new standard acoustic soft top, is the E-Class Cabriolet, one of the quietest four-seater premium cabriolets with cloth top. When we drove with a closed roof, the interiour noise shows no significant disadvantages. The wind noise was on the same low level like a car with normal roof. Overall, the softtop roof is 23.5 millimeters thick. The rear window is glass.

Fully automatic opening and closing of the roof takes around 20 seconds and is possible at speeds of up to 40 km/h. A pull on the control on the centre tunnel is all it takes. Alternatively, the roof can be controlled remotely by pressing a button on the key. The soft top engages automatically at the front roof crossmember.

The soft top is stowed in a special compartment behind the rear panel. A retractable cover separates the soft top compartment from the boot area. If the roof is to remain closed, the cover can be slid rearwards, in which case the boot capacity is increased by 90 litres to 390 litres.

The E 350 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY Cabriolet costs in Germany 56. 882,- euros. Our test vehicle in Diamond White metallic paint, with Dynamic Handling Package, Light Package, Airscarf neck-level heating system, Comfort-ventilated front seats – heating and cooling, Multi-contour seats for driver and front passenger, Memory Package, Luxury climate control, Distronic Plus, COMAND APS multimedia system with Media Interface, Surround sound system – Harman Kardon Logic7, Telephone pre-wiring, Rear sidebags, Black Piano Lacquer and some other optional equipment costs 80.533,25 euros.
