Now it is confirmed: Jenson Button, Formula 1 world champion 2009, moves to McLaren, and leaves the new Mercedes Grand Prix team.
English newspapers starts writing the “international match” in Formula 1, but in the new Mercedes team is nothing decided at the moment. Officially, there are no details on possible drivers released. With Jenson Button and the predecessor champion Lewis Hamilton, McLaren hold the Formula 1 champions of the last two years. Both from the same country: England.
In October vice-president Mercedes-Benz Motorsport Norbert Haug told the press: “There are no negotiations with Jenson Button. I understand that people in England dream by an English team with two world champions, but dreams are not always true.” Now, the statements from Mr. Haug have been changed: “We have given him a fair offer and make a fresh start anyway – we accept his decision and wish all the best to Jenson.
The last offer from Mercedes for the new Formula 1 world champion stood at 4.5 million euros. English media says, that McLaren will pay 7 million euros to Jenson. The new Mercedes team says currently nothing who will be the drivers in the next season. The rumors call Nico Rosberg and Nick Heidfeld, as a possible german driver’s duo.
