In the 1950s, a very special star rose in Stuttgart: the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class was born. It all began with motor racing sports. With its successes in international competitions, in 1952 the 300 SL competition sports car (W 194 series, “SL” stands for “Super-Light”), became the initial spark for the start of two fascinating production sports cars – the “Gullwing” coupé and the roadster: the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL and 190 SL laid the foundation for the tradition of this legendary sports car family in the year 1954.

Mercedes-Benz caused a sensation with the presentation of these two vehicles at the 1954 International Motor Sports Show in New York. Specialists and the general public alike were enthusiastic. The 300 SL was presented for the first time as a series-production sports car (W 198 series), the famous “Gullwing” coupé. The totally newly-designed 190 SL (W 121 series) presented by the company as a roadster, created just as powerful an impact. This first-generation SL sports cars already allowed one to envisage the brilliant future that lay ahead of these attractive and innovative production vehicles with motor sport abbreviations in their designation.

Based on the legendary Gullwing coupé, the open 300 SL Roadster (W 198 II), which was built in parallel with the 190 SL, was launched in 1957. The body form of the two-seater open car was thus defined as the typical characteristic of the SL family. The 300 SL and the 190 SL together prefigured numerous features of later SL generations and both were thus the forerunners of all the SL series that followed.

In 1963 the SL, W 113 series arrived on the scene; it was dubbed the “Pagoda SL” because of the characteristic shape of its hardtop roof. It was followed in 1971 by the R 107 series that achieved the highest production volume of all SL series to date because of its long production life of 18 years. In March 1989 Mercedes-Benz introduced the R 129 series. Featuring numerous technical innovations, this car carried the SL-Class over into the new millennium. After a production period of twelve years and two facelifts it was replaced in 2001 by the R 230 series – the first one with a steel folding top. Finally, in the spring of 2012 the R 231 series is due to be launched as the next generation of the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class.

The American photographer and filmmaker, Alex Prager, is known for creating surreal and enigmatic movie moments inspired by Frederico Fellini and David Lynch. Yet in her versions – heady with mystery, lust and desire – the woman is in control. Of her enigmatic images for the 2012 Mercedes-Benz Icons of Style, Alex Prager said she chose cinematic greats as her Icons of Style. “I constantly reference Fellini characters and Hitchcock as well,” said Prager.

Dutch supermodel, Lara Stone plays the update on the Hitchcock blonde, a strong protagonist who overcomes loneliness and fear. This inner strength is underscored by a timeless and elegant dress worn by Lara Stone and designed by Calvin Klein Collection’s Women’s Creative Director, Francisco Costa.

The SL Roadster featured in the latest Mercedes-Benz Icon of Style campaign, combines technical innovation with sleek sportiness and classic luxury and reinterprets the legendary Mercedes-Benz classic of the 1950s for today.

Lara Stone commented, “It’s an honor to work with Mercedes-Benz on a project like this. Both Mercedes-Benz and Calvin Klein Collection brands represent great luxury and timeless elegance and it was a really unique experience.”

The Mercedes-Benz Fashion Collaboration, Icons of Style, is making its US debut at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Fall 2012 from February 9-15, 2012.

The 2012 Icons of Style key visual is the latest in a stunning series of outstanding visuals celebrating the unique combination of design and style that is Mercedes-Benz. Nick Knight has posed Julia Stegner in Gareth Pugh with the SLS AMG; Miles Aldridge photographed Milla Jovovich wearing a spectacular hat from Philip Treacy next to the Mercedes E-Class Convertible; Craig McDean and David James staged Karolina Kurkova next to the new CLS and last season, Terry Richardson captured Jessica Stam on the roof of the A-Class concept car.

The protagonists:
Mercedes-Benz SL Roadster
The designers have presented the most recent generation of SL icons in an unmistakeable way, by combining a deep sense tradition with new perspectives and visions. The result is a stylish, sporty and elegant luxury sport’s car with the classic, SL-typical well-balanced proportions: the long bonnet is followed by a compact passenger compartment and the wide, sleek rear perfects the look. Understated, artistically designed lines define the powerfully modelled yet smooth surfaces ofits silhouette. Finely engineered details from the dynamic, traditional form repertoire of Mercedes-Benz visually underline the legend of the SL. From a technological perspective, the SL presents itself as a spectacular trendsetter. Manufactured almost completely from aluminium, it weighs a lot less than its predecessor. Innovations like the unique FrontBass system, which turns the SL into a concert hall, whether open or closed, or the adaptive MAGIC VISION CONTROL System are all pioneering developments with an eye to the future.

Alex Prager
Self-taught Alex Prager from Los Angeles is a rising star in the photographer sky. On a visit to a William Egglestone exhibition, Alex Prager made the decision to start taking photos herself. Since then, the 32-year-old photographic artist and filmmaker has impressed with her unconventional photography at several solo and group exhibitions. Her productions are inspired by the style of the sixties, as well as by the films by great directors like Alfred Hitchcock, David Lynch and Frederico Fellini. Alex Prager describes her photography as a documentation of a world that at the same time exists and yet does not exist. In addition to her well-received trilogy with the series “Polyester”, “The Big Valley” and “Week-end”, Alex Prager has also made a name for herself as a fashion photographer. Her “Lofty Ambitions” editorial featured in the September issue of US Vogue and she also shot the spring/summer 2011 campaign by Bottega Veneta with Karolina Kurkova.

Lara Stone
The native Dutch model is currently top of the worldwide rankings on Models.com. Since her breakthrough in 2006 she has been the campaign face for top labels like Givenchy, Louis Vuitton, Hugo Boss, Max Mara and Versace, has worked with star photographers including Mario Testino, Steven Meisel, Craig McDean, Mario Sorrenti and Terry Richardson and has modelled on the catwalk for all major, international fashion houses. The gap between her two front teeth has become one of her trademark features.

She is currently the face of Calvin Klein and has been linked to the brand for quite some time. French Vogue dedicated a whole issue to Lara Stone in February 2009, and fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld shot a short film with her.

Calvin Klein Collection’s Francisco Costa
Francisco Costa is the critically acclaimed Women’s Creative Director of Calvin Klein Collection. Mr. Costa assumed this role in 2003 after working directly with Calvin Klein and other top design houses of Gucci, Balmain Couture, and Oscar de la Renta. Mr. Costa’s first collection for Calvin Klein Collection debuted for Spring 2004. Known for his timeless, elegant designs, Mr. Costa has received numerous awards for his work, including being twice named the Womenswear Designer of the Year by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), and is a recipient of the Cooper-Hewitt National Fashion Design Award. A graduate of F.I.T., Mr. Costa was born into a family with deep roots in fashion, and grew up in the small Brazilian town of Guarani near Rio de Janiero, where his mother and father owned a successful apparel business.

The new ML 63 AMG
The new Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG stands for efficiency and performance, exclusivity and a superlative driving experience. The basis for low fuel consumption and top-class performance is provided by the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine with a maximum power output of 386 kW (525 hp) and maximum torque of 700 Newton metres.

[See post to watch Flash video]

The newly developed ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM for active roll stabilisation, the AMG-specific design and the broad scope of standard equipment and appointments provide for a highly attractive overall package. Power transmission to all four permanently driven wheels is performed by the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC system. Featuring three driving programmes and an automatic double-declutching function for downshifting, this seven-speed automatic transmission offers a fascinatingly broad scope of variability. A sporty character and premium quality define the interior of the high-performance SUV from AMG. This is embodied in the electrically adjustable AMG sports seats offering pronounced lateral support as well as the four-spoke AMG Performance steering wheel. Aluminium trim elements and the piano-lacquer retractable cover in the centre console highlight the interior’s special dynamic and exclusive flair. The standard leather upholstery includes contrasting double topstitching and AMG badges in the backrests of the front seats and the outer rear seats. Dashboard, armrests and door panelling in AMG-specific design are finished in ARTICO man-made leather with double topstitching.

The new SL: Lightweight, athletic, luxurious
With the completely redeveloped SL, Mercedes-Benz continues a tradition that began 60 years ago. The letters “SL” have ever since been synonymous with a symbiosis of sportiness, style and comfort – and with groundbreaking innovations.

[See post to watch Flash video]

The new SL has been produced for the first time almost entirely from aluminium and weighs up to 140 kilograms less than its predecessor. Its highly rigid all-aluminium bodyshell provides the basis for agile, sporty handling that has been taken to an entirely new level, coupled with exemplary roll characteristics and ride comfort. Other new features include the unique Frontbass system, which turns the luxury sports car into a concert hall regardless of whether the top is open or closed, and the highly efficient adaptive windscreen wipe/wash system MAGIC VISION CONTROL; it supplies water from the wiper blade as required and depending on the direction of wipe. The new SL combines its aesthetically honed profile, which follows the Mercedes-Benz tradition, with a luxurious feel. Fine materials, perfectly finished with great attention to detail, distinguish the style and character of the interior.

Even better driving dynamics come courtesy of the new BlueDIRECT engines; they are more powerful yet at the same time up to 29 percent more economical than the engines in the outgoing generation.

Compared with its successful predecessor, the new Mercedes-Benz SL offers considerably more comfort and sportiness, setting new standards in the luxury roadster class. Added to which is uncompromising day-to-day suitability, which turns the SL into an incomparable all-rounder among sports cars. In short, anyone that talks about the new SL is bound to be talking about the ultimate in passionate, refined motoring.

Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars: “There are around 900 million cars in the world and thousands of models. But there are only a handful of automotive icons. Our SL is one of them: it has class, it has style, it is the ultimate in comfort and luxury. But it combines all that with incredible sportiness and dynamism. You would struggle to find a car that embodies Gottlieb Daimler’s aspiration more perfectly than our new SL: the best or nothing.”

Lighter and more rigid: sophisticated all-aluminium bodyshell
The new-generation Mercedes-Benz SL takes the meaning of the famous letters “SL” – sporty, lightweight – literally. Consistent weight reduction is one of the most outstanding design characteristics in the new SL as was the case in its namesake, the original SL of 1952 with its lightweight tubular frame. For the first time Mercedes-Benz has implemented an all-aluminium bodyshell in a series-production model. Only very few components consist of other materials. The designers use the even lighter magnesium for the cover behind the tank. High-strength steel tubing is integrated in the A-pillars for safety reasons.

The new aluminium bodyshell weighs around 110 kilograms less than it would using the steel technology from the predecessor. “The effect is rather as if a heavyweight-class passenger had got out of the car” says Dr Thomas Rudlaff, responsible for the aluminium bodyshell at Mercedes-Benz. “The result is perceptible and measurable. Less weight means more dynamism and less consumption. In other words: the motoring enjoyment increases, the environmental burden sinks.”

The aluminium structure is not only lighter but also proves superior to the predecessor’s steel construction in terms of rigidity, safety and comfort. This is achieved thanks, among other things, to its intelligent lightweight construction with components optimised for their specific task. Thus, diverse processes are used to make different kinds of aluminium depending on the use the component is to be given: the parts are made by chill casting or vacuum die-casting, worked into extruded aluminium sections or into aluminium panels of different thicknesses. The result: high rigidity, high safety levels and better vibration characteristics.

Although the new SL is even more comfortable and has more assistance systems on-board than its predecessor and therefore does actually sacrifice some of the weight saved through the aluminium bodyshell, the scales show some astonishing figures: the new SL 500 (1.785 kg) weighs around 125 kilograms less than its predecessor. On balance, the SL 350 (1.685 kg) is even 140 kilograms lighter – all thanks to a host of other intelligent enhanced details to reduce weight, which Mercedes-Benz has also implemented in the new SL in addition to the aluminium bodyshell.

Driving pleasure: frugal, powerful engines and agile suspension
Powerful while accelerating, effortlessly superior across all speeds, nimble on winding roads – the new SL provides ample driving pleasure. Apart from the powerful engines, the sportily tuned yet comfortable suspension, which also boasts intelligent lightweight construction, proves outstanding. For instance, the steering knuckles and spring links on the front axle are also made out of aluminium to reduce the unsprung masses. The same also applies to virtually all the wheel location components on the rear axle.
The new SL is available with two different suspension systems: the SL features semi-active adjustable damping as standard. The optional active suspension system ABC (Active Body Control) is available as an alternative.

Both suspension variants are combined with a new electromechanical Direct-Steer system featuring speed-sensitive power steering and a ratio that can be varied across the steering wheel angle. This ensures excellent straight-line stability and, therefore, a high degree of assuredness when travelling at motorway speeds and makes the SL very agile. It also reduces the amount of steering required when parking and manoeuvring.

The new V8 in the SL 500 develops 320 kW (435 hp) from its displacement of 4663 cc and thus around 12 percent more than its predecessor despite some 0.8 litres less displacement. The fuel consumption has been reduced by up to 22 percent. At the same time, the torque has increased from 530 Nm to 700 Nm – a gain of 32 percent. Although the displacement remains the same at 3499 cc, the new V6 engine in the new SL 350 develops 225 kW (306 hp) and delivers 370 Nm of torque. It uses just 6.8 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres, making it almost 30 percent more economical than its predecessor. Both engine variants come with a standard-fit ECO start/stop function. The 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission, which has been optimised in relation to fuel consumption and comfort, also contributes to the exemplary, low fuel consumption. The fuel economy of the BlueDIRECT engines takes nothing away from the roadster’s raciness. Quite the contrary: the SL 350 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds, making it three tenths of a second faster than its predecessor. The SL 500 takes just 4.6 seconds – eight tenths less than the previous SL 500.

Interior: aesthetic, stylish, sporty
The new SL combines its aesthetically honed profile, which follows the Mercedes-Benz tradition, with a luxurious feel. Fine materials, perfectly finished with great attention to detail, distinguish the style and character of the interior.

Compared with its predecessor, the new generation of the SL is much longer 4612 mm (+50 mm) and wider 1877 mm (+57 mm), providing more room for more comfort in the interior, too. Shoulder room (+37 mm) and elbow room (+28 mm) have been increased, exceeding the dimensions normally found in this vehicle class. Clear lines create a formally coherent internal space within this comfortable interior. Generously used wood trim extends from the centre console across the dashboard into the doors, creating a pleasant wrap-around effect. Three types of wood along with two different aluminium trim finishes are available. Perfectly in tune with the roadster’s character, it combines the unpretentious atmosphere of a high-performance sports car with a comfortable, stylish ambience one comes to expect in a luxurious touring car.

Design: classic SL proportions
The designers have brought the latest generation of the SL unmistakably to life on the basis of tradition but added new perspectives and visions. The result is a stylishly sporty and elegant luxury sports car with the classic hallmark SL balanced proportions: the long bonnet gives way to a compact passenger compartment that is set well back. A wide, powerful rear end giving the impression of raciness provides the finishing touch. A handful of elaborately styled lines define the powerfully sculpted and yet calm surfaces of the flanks. Finely worked details, a striking rear end as well as ventilation grilles with chromed fins from the dynamic traditional Mercedes-Benz design heritage visually emphasise the SL legend.

An upright classic sports car radiator grille clearly marks out the new SL visually as a prestigious member of the current Mercedes-Benz sports car family. The centrally positioned star is a contemporary reinterpretation of the famous trademark, which now extends into the centre section with its organically flowing contours.
Dynamically slanting headlamps set well to the outside flank the striking front end and give the new roadster its own unmistakable face. The headlamps come as standard with the Intelligent Light System (ILS). With five different lighting functions that are tailored to typical driving and weather conditions, and are activated depending on the driving situation, they offer the driver a much better illuminated field of vision. The striking sidelights and the horizontal strip of the daytime running lamps in the far ends of the bumper feature LED technology.

Vario-roof: MAGIC SKY CONTROL as an option
The sixth generation of the SL also offers a vario-roof that can be retracted into the boot using an electrohydraulic mechanism to save space, which converts the SL in a few seconds into a roadster or a coupé, depending on the driver’s wishes and the weather. Unlike its predecessor, three versions are available for the new SL: painted, with glass roof or with the unique panoramic vario-roof with MAGIC SKY CONTROL. The transparent roof switches to light or dark at the push of a button. When light it is virtually transparent, offering an open-air experience even in cold weather. In its dark state the roof provides welcome shade and prevents the interior from heating up in bright sunlight. The frame of the three roof versions is made of magnesium, making the roofs around six kilograms lighter than the roof on the predecessor, thus providing a lower centre of gravity for the vehicle and, in turn, better agility.

The engineers have refined the operating mechanism for the roof and boot lid. It now takes less than 20 seconds to open or close the roof completely.

Aerodynamics: new standards
The design of the new SL not only meets high aesthetic demands but it also boasts exemplary aerodynamic qualities.

As such, the roadster merits best marks in its segment in four important disciplines:
-    With the lowest drag coefficient (cd = 0.27 in the SL 350);
-    With the lowest wind noise that is virtually on a par with a closed saloon;
-    With the best comfort for open-top motoring so that you can still have the roof down even at high speed;
- With virtually no accumulation of dirt on the side windows.

Two world premieres: Frontbass and MAGIC VISION CONTROL
With two innovations, the new SL remains true to its tradition as technological trendsetter:

MAGIC VISION CONTROL is a new, intelligent and highly efficient wipe/wash system. The innovative wiper blade concept always applies the washer fluid just in front of the wiper blade lip via the channels integrated into the blade – in both directions of wipe. As a result, no water is splashed onto the windscreen during spraying to disrupt the driver’s visibility, while at the same time cleaning the windscreen perfectly. The water also remains on the windscreen, thus ensuring it is cleaned without troubling the occupants, even with the roof down. For the first time a fully heated wiper blade is available as an option that prevents snow or ice from forming on the blade in winter. This heating function also allows warm water to be applied directly onto the windscreen for the first time, even in cold temperatures.

The likewise unique Frontbass system intelligently uses the free spaces in the aluminium structures in front of the footwell as resonance spaces for the bass loudspeakers. As a result the new SL features clear, crisp bass sounds that make possible a concert hall ambience even with the top down, and frees up space in the doors.

Both innovations are part of the extensive standard equipment of the new SL.

HANDS-FREE ACCESS: ‘kick’ to open
The HANDS-FREE ACCESS system is another Mercedes-Benz innovation which provides hands-free, contactless operation of the boot lid. The driver simply moves their foot in the vicinity of the rear bumper. Mercedes-Benz is the only car maker to offer a system which not only automatically opens the boot lid but closes it as well.

The safest roadster
Thanks to the crash-optimised aluminium structure, standard-fit PRE-SAFE and assistance systems on the same high level as the S-Class, the SL is the world’s safest roadster. The rigid aluminium bodyshell forms a sturdy passenger compartment along with precisely defined deformation zones in the front and rear ends. In the event of the vehicle overturning, A-pillars made out of a mix of steel and aluminium and two roll-over bars protect the passenger compartment. The restraint systems including the two-stage driver and front passenger airbags have been further developed. A headbag integrally covers the side head-impact area. An additional thorax airbag in the seat backrest can protect the upper body in the event of a side impact. Another new feature is the crash-responsive NECK-PRO head restraints developed by Mercedes-Benz which are fitted as standard in the SL.

An active bonnet and a front end with a large, yielding impact area help ensure pedestrian protection.
A safety highlight is the unrivalled anticipatory occupant protection system PRE-SAFE® developed by Mercedes-Benz which is fitted as standard. If the system detects a serious risk of an accident, it reflexively activates precautionary protective measures for the vehicle occupants, so that the seat belts and airbags are able to fulfil their protective function to the full during an impact.

Additional post-crash measures supplement the integral safety concept and facilitate rapid assistance: regardless of the severity of the impact, the doors can be automatically unlocked after an accident, the interior lighting activated and the side windows lowered by 50 millimetres to ventilate the interior more effectively. The steering wheel can also be moved upwards.

Standard: ATTENTION ASSIST AND ADAPTIVE BRAKE
In the new SL too, a unique combination of driver assistance systems helps prevent accidents. These include the standard-fit drowsiness detection system ATTENTION ASSIST and the ADAPTIVE BRAKE. The latter features ABS, acceleration skid control (ASR) and active yaw control, and offers comfort and convenience functions in addition to safety functions.

The ADAPTIVE BRAKE works in conjunction with the equally adaptive brake lights. In emergency braking situations, it warns vehicles behind with flashing brake lights.

PRE-SAFE Brake: autonomous partial and emergency braking in response to a serious risk of a rear-end collision
As an option DISTRONIC PLUS proximity control and PRE-SAFE Brake, which is already well proven in other Mercedes-Benz models, are available. Both work on the basis of the same radar sensors. Once a serious risk of a rear-end collision is detected, the PRE-SAFE Brake warns the driver initially and can initiate autonomous braking if the driver fails to react, and so either prevent the accident or at least mitigate its severity. PRE-SAFE can also activate occupant protection measures.

Active Parking Assist: automatically manoeuvred into a parking space
The Active Parking Assist is new in the SL. Using ultrasound sensors it can identify parking spaces and automatically steer the vehicle into the space while parking.

Infotainment: COMAND with internet access
Even in the entry-level variant, the new Mercedes-Benz SL comes with the “Cockpit Management and Data System” COMAND. Functionality includes Bluetooth telephony along with simpler operation of the car phone. COMAND Online with internet access and DVD changer is also available as an option. It provides unlimited web browsing while the vehicle is stationary along with high-speed access to a Mercedes-Benz online service – for instance requesting a weather report or a special destination search. There is also the option of sending individual destinations and routes via Google Maps to the vehicle. For the first time, Mercedes-Benz is also offering new apps for the new SL: in addition to a free news app and a Facebook app, there are optional Mercedes-Benz apps for share prices and a car park finder. A Yelp app to look for restaurants is available for the US market.

Both COMAND versions feature a high-resolution TFT colour display with 17.8 cm diagonal (800 x 480 pixels) at the side next to the instrument cluster. This screen arrangement prevents the driver from being distracted as far as possible.

The new SL can be ordered from 15 December 2011. The prices including 19% VAT are as follows:
SL 350 BlueEFFICIENCY: 93,534.00 euros
SL 500 BlueEFFICIENCY: 117,096.00 euros

To coincide with the launch of the new SL, Mercedes-Benz will also be offering a special-edition model, the “Edition 1″, for a limited period. The “Edition 1″ is superbly equipped and comes as standard with a panoramic vario-roof, AMG bodystyling, sports suspension, AMG 19-inch light-alloy wheels, designo nappa leather with contrasting topstitching, AIRSCARF, heated seats, electric draught-stop, ambient lighting and Harman/Kardon Logic7 surround sound system and much more. The designo crystal silver magno special paintwork is available exclusively for the “Edition 1″, along with trim in wave or deep white aluminium. Depending on the basic model, the extra charge is between 19,028.10 euros and 22,598.10 euros.

An astonishing experience: the wiper blade glides over the badly soiled windscreen of the future new SL, without a sign of a cleaning water jet, the occupants cannot see anything yet the windscreen is still cleaned!

The new SL is the first vehicle to be equipped with the high-efficiency adaptive MAGIC VISION CONTROL wiper/washer system developed by Mercedes-Benz. It cleans the windscreen without the familiar splash of water that usually briefly disrupts the driver’s field of view – something that is especially unpleasant at night or when the sun is low in the sky.

In fact, the windscreen cleaning operation in the new SL will be performed with washing water in the conventional manner. The innovation lies in the way the fluid is conducted to the windscreen in order to clean it. This is done by means of a sophisticated system of ducts that go to the wiper blade, which is flanked by two precisely formed water channels at left and right, with minute laser-cut discharge openings. Via these channels, the innovative Mercedes-Benz washer/wiper system always supplies washing water to the windscreen efficiently and discreetly precisely where it is needed: just in front of the wiper blade lip, according to the direction of movement of the wiper. The discharge openings are distributed along the entire length of the wiper blade, being more closely spaced towards the outside of the blade, where it sweeps a greater area, than closer in, where the area swept is smaller.

Programmes for summer, winter and cabriolet operation
Mercedes-Benz controls the MAGIC VISION CONTROL system, the first integrated windscreen wipe/wash system in the world, intelligently via three partly autonomous wash programmes – for summer, for winter and for cabriolet driving. In summer, small quantities of water are sufficient to remove a light powdering of dust. In winter the dirt mixed with de-icing salt requires a greater amount of water. The MAGIC VISION CONTROL system not only works in accordance with the season, it also automatically adapts the wiper water quantity to the surrounding conditions, such as e.g. the ambient temperature, road speed, and the current driving situation. If, for example, the windscreen should happen to be heavily soiled in summer, the system will automatically deliver a greater amount of water to the windscreen.

A particularly interesting feature of the SL Roadster in the Cabriolet function: when the hard top is down, the electronic control system reduces the amount of water, apart from which it demands the required water mainly on the downward stroke of the wiper arm. This way the windscreen can be conveniently cleaned at all speeds and with open roof without any of the water spraying into the vehicle interior. Another pleasant side effect: since the wipe water is directed specifically and well-metered to the area to be cleaned, one doesn’t douse anyone else in the surroundings with water, either. At the end of the day, an equally good or even better cleaning effect is attained with only around half the otherwise needed amount of wipe water. Because of this, a smaller water reservoir suffices perfectly so that it has been possible to reduce its volume by 1.7 litres compared with the preceding model. This in turn means less weight and consequently greater efficiency.

A heating system makes winter-proof
The new SL’s MAGIC VISION CONTROL wiper blades can be optionally fully heated. With this, Mercedes-Benz offers for the first time in the world and as the only automaker, a fully heated wiper/washer system. It consists of a washer fluid container heated through coolant residual heat, electric heating for the entire hose system and as a newly-developed highlight, a fully heated wiper blade. This effectively prevents the formation of snow on the wiper blades, so typical in winter. To do this each of the spring rails of the blade is equipped with a heater foil with an output of 35 Watts per blade. It heats the spoiler and the wipe lip. Snow and ice cannot freeze onto the blade; it remains supple in winter, too, and cleans just as well but with reduced wiping noise.

The heating is also controlled requirement-oriented according to duration of operation and outside temperature. It is only below a temperature of minus 20 degrees Centigrade that the system makes use of the entire system’s maximum output, 270 Watts. Between 5 degrees above and 20 degrees below zero the heating operates in an energy-saving mode and only requires the output needed to thaw out the wiper/washer system and keep it snow and ice free.

Cars are becoming increasingly safer, more comfortable, but often heavier as well. The new Mercedes-Benz SL not only stops this trend, it turns it around. In spite of increased comfort, performance and safety, it is 140 kilos lighter than its predecessor.

The greater part of the weight-reduction “diet” is hidden from the eyes of the observer of the SL. Under the aluminium outer skin there is a bodyshell made almost entirely from aluminium, only very few components being made from other materials. The even lighter magnesium is used in part for the rear panel. The A-pillars and the roof frame are of steel sheet metal incorporating high-strength steel tubing. For these elements steel is the best solution to provide survival space for occupants in the event of the vehicle overturning. Everything else is made of aluminium.

The bodyshell of the SL is the first all-aluminium bodyshell to be produced in large series at Mercedes-Benz. This entirely new development weighs 254 kilos and is thus 110 kilos lighter than a comparable steel bodyshell. Further extensive lightweight design features compensate the additional weight unavoidably caused by the increased comfort, the new assistance systems and other technical features. Under the bottom line an enormous weight advantage remains for the new SL. The new SL 500 weighs 125 kilograms less than its predecessor, while the SL 350 weighs the above-mentioned 140 kilos less than its previous version. And its preceding model already had lightweight aluminium bonnet and doors.

“The effect is rather as if a heavyweight-class passenger had got out of the car and taken his heavy flight luggage, too” says Dr Thomas Rudlaff, responsible for the aluminium bodyshell at Mercedes-Benz. “The result is perceptible and measurable. Less weight means more dynamism and less consumption. In other words: the motoring enjoyment increases and the environmental burden sinks.”

For the roadster the aluminium bodyshell is superior to a steel construction
The developers at Mercedes-Benz did not rest content achieving weight benefits alone. The aluminium structure had to be superior to a steel construction in terms of rigidity and comfort as well. In order to attain this high objective, developers consistently went for intelligent lightweight construction, and explored many new paths to do this. Every single component of the aluminium bodyshell was specifically optimised for its particular function and expected loads. Thus, diverse processes are used to make different kinds of aluminium depending on the use the component is to be given: the parts are made by chill casting or vacuum die casting, worked into extruded aluminium sections or into aluminium plates of thicknesses that vary within one and the same component; these are the so-called tailored welded blanks. Expressed in numbers, the bodyshell weight is made up of: 44 percent cast aluminium, 17 percent aluminium sections, 28 percent aluminium sheet metal, 8 percent steel and 3 percent of other materials.

At the Bremen production facilities the parts are assembled using diverse load-adequate joining methods, some of which are innovative processes. Secure joints are ensured for example, by MIG welding, hemming, bonding, self-piercing rivets, flow hole bolting, or friction stir welding – a joining method by which a highly resistant weld seam is produced by means of friction heat; a method particularly well-suited for aluminium on account of its low melting point.

Particular highlights of the bodyshell:

- The Front Wall is at present the largest aluminium cast component made in large series for vehicle bodywork

- Many sheet metal parts are designed in such a way that for the first time they can be made from 100 percent recycled aluminium, saving 80 percent of the energy used in their production.

- The main floorpan is a 3-layer shaped panel made from thin, extrusion-moulded hollow sections, welded together by friction stir welding.

- The longitudinal members in the vehicle front end are made using high-pressure hydroforming (IHU) technology, which enables the creation of highly complex and robust components, permitting optimum use of reduced installation spaces.

- The door sills (longitudinal members) consist of 1.7-metre long, 7-chamber extrusion-moulded aluminium sections; these provide rigidity in the lateral sectors and safety in the event of a collision. Flexible chamber distribution makes possible a minimum component weight coupled with optimum characteristics.

- The tunnel is made of aluminium sheet metal with a reinforcement of varying thickness (3 different thicknesses depending on sector, a so-called tailored welded blank TWB).

- The rear sector floor is a MIG welded frame with a hollow chilled cast longitudinal member as its central element. This technique is employed in the SL for the very first time in automotive bodyshell construction.

- The rear sector floor frame structure is closed by floor sheet metal panels and the boot tub made by vacuum die-casting.

- The spare wheel recess is made from recycled sheet metal.

- The central member connects the front end with the rear sector floor. The mounting points for the drive shaft, the transmission cross beam, the transmission tunnel braces and the seat bolting points on the tunnel side are all integrated into a single element. The wall thicknesses and rib distribution are oriented bionically towards the requirements and loads.

- Many other components were optimised bionically, i.e. based on examples from nature. These structures reduce the vehicle weight compared to a classic design even further.

The sum total of all the design measures leads to a lightweight, torsionally and flexurally rigid bodyshell with an optimum rigidity/weight ratio. It was possible to increase the bodywork’s torsional rigidity by more than 20 percent over the already highly rigid preceding series. This is confirmed by measurements of the new SL’s torsional strength – at 19400 Nm per degree the roadster achieves an absolute top value (its predecessor already reached the astounding figure of 16400 Nm per degree).

Meets the highest safety standards
At the same time the high-strength structural elements of the aluminium bodyshell make the new SL even safer than the preceding model in the event of a collision. Extrusion-moulded sections, connecting cast nodes and double-thickness plate floor form a passenger compartment that is just as lightweight as it is sturdy. Two aluminium sections in each door together with the side sills (very rigid thanks to their internal chamber structure) and crash-resistant seats provide the greatest possible survival space in the event of a side-on collision.

A front end deformation zone acting on several levels and in which the aluminium front axle integral carrier is integrated as an additional third longitudinal member, distributes collision forces to a large area, conducting them past the passenger compartment. And in the rear, too, there is sufficient energy-absorbing deformation potential. A structural cage made from chilled cast longitudinal members, transversal sections and a cast magnesium tank separation bulkhead also contribute to this. This is also where the fuel tank is nested in a crash-protected manner above the rear axle. This way all the statutory safety requirements are met as well as the even stricter ones from Mercedes-Benz.

Best marks for NVH comfort
Thanks to its innovative aluminium bodyshell concept, the new SL is also unique among the roadsters in terms of NVH comfort (noise, vibration, harshness). One contributing factor towards its optimum vibration- and top-level roll characteristics is, among other things, the extremely rigid connection between front end and vehicle rear section. This makes for relaxed travel, even on long journeys, while delivering thrilling driving dynamism at the same time.

Although aluminium features a higher sound emission and radiation level than steel, the new SL is the quietest vehicle in its class. Mercedes-Benz compensates for the acoustic disadvantages of aluminium by means of a consistent sound insulation concept with targeted adaptation of the sound damping materials to each problem zone, and through the use of innovative sound insulation materials:

- A special firewall damping with variable mass distribution and a significant heavy layer proportion attenuates engine noise.

- In conjunction with the plate floor, single-piece, foam-backed carpeting with virtually no seams reduces the roll noise of the vehicle in the interior.

- A spray-on lining attenuates the structure-borne sound in the vehicle interior and exterior.

- Textile wheelhouse linings, acoustically absorbing shield plates and bodyshell foam elements for critical sectors also contribute towards a smooth ride.

- Damping in the rear wall transversal cross member and boot lateral elements as well as in the forced ventilation openings prevent disruptive tyre and wind noises from making themselves unpleasantly noticeable in the vehicle interior.

A further contribution to the good interior acoustics is the laminated glass windscreen with acoustic film. The transparent, highly resilient film absorbs the vibrations of the windscreen and reduces the perceptible sound level in many frequency ranges.

The doors and the bonnet, too, are lightweight
The intelligent material mix is completed by the boot lid, of SMC-hybrid design (SMC = sheet moulding compound). It consists of a single-shell synthetic material panel mounted on a steel reinforcement. Both materials have virtually identical thermal expansion coefficients and complement each other very well. The interior steel construction permits maximum rigidity with minimum use of space, while the plastic panelling allows the full integration of the aerials for navigation, digital radio and mobile telephony out of sight in the rear area so that the SL, unlike many other vehicles, does not need to carry an aerial stump on its aerodynamically refined body.

The bonnet of the SL is made from aluminium, as that of its predecessor. It was optimised in terms of form and materials, contributing towards outstanding pedestrian protection.

The doors, too, are of a lightweight design and made from aluminium. They are fashioned from a combination of sheet metal, extruded sections and cast metal parts, joined by diverse methods: riveting, bonding and hemming. Their aluminium and steel hinges are friction-based and can be opened infinitely adjustable to any desired angle, so that when getting into or out of the car they can remain securely open at any angle permitted by the space available at the side. This is particularly desirable in cramped parking conditions such as in a parking garage or on a parking lot.

Sophisticated corrosion protection concept
“The corrosion prevention measures used on the new SL are the best you can find on the market” says Dr Paul Dick, responsible for corrosion prevention at Mercedes.

The aluminium bodyshell of the new SL offers no point of attack for corrosion. A sophisticated surface protection concept ensures the preservation of the brilliant look both of the outside skin and of the underside of the sheet metal panels, thus protecting at the same time the renowned reliability and value stability of Mercedes-Benz vehicles. The protection concept was developed and tested on the basis of the environmental burden in different climate zones of the world and the specific loads the vehicle is subjected to. The foundation for maximum corrosion resistance is formed by corrosion-resistant aluminium alloys and design features, while the few steel vehicle components are all fully galvanised. High-quality zinc-nickel coatings or special electrochemical insulation measures prevent contact corrosion with aluminium. All the seams are meticulously sealed, the surfaces protected through cathodic dip priming and multiple coats of paint. Sectors particularly exposed to corrosion are additionally protected with wax, to ensure that the pristine aspect of the new car is preserved for a long time.

Before the year is out, Mercedes-Benz will present a completely redeveloped SL Roadster made for the first time almost entirely from aluminium. The full aluminium bodyshell of this newly developed vehicle weighs around 110 kilograms less than a comparable bodyshell constructed with the technology used for its predecessor.

It thus reduces the overall weight of the new SL by 140 kilograms compared to its predecessor. At the same time, the new generation of this luxury sport car can be converted into an open or a closed concert hall. This is thanks to the new bodyshell structure which makes possible the FrontBass system, unique in the world and also celebrating its debut. As a further world first, Mercedes-Benz is also presenting the highly effective MAGIC VISION CONTROL adaptive windscreen wipe/wash system. It delivers water requirement-based and depending on the direction of wipe, directly to the wiper blade; neither a water jet nor a film of water can be seen, and yet the windscreen stays perfectly clean for the driver and passenger.

The new-generation Mercedes-Benz SL takes the meaning of the letters “SL” – sporty, lightweight – very seriously. Consistent weight reduction is one of the most outstanding design results in the new SL as was the case in its namesake, the original SL of 1954. For the first time Mercedes-Benz implements a full aluminium bodyshell in large series production. Only very few components are made from other materials. The designers use the even lighter magnesium for the rear panel. High-strength steel tubing is integrated in the A-pillars.

The newly developed car weighs around 110 kilograms less than a comparable bodyshell constructed in analogous manner to the previous technology.

In terms of rigidity, safety and comfort, the aluminium structure proves superior to the predecessor’s steel construction. This is achieved thanks, among other things, to its intelligent lightweight construction with components optimised for their specific task. Thus, diverse processes are used to make different kinds of aluminium depending on the use the component is to be given: the parts are made by chill casting or vacuum die casting, worked into extruded aluminium sections or into aluminium plates of different thicknesses. The result: high rigidity, high safety levels and low resonance and vibrations.

The parts are assembled using diverse load-adequate joining methods, some of which are innovative processes. Secure joints are ensured for example, by MIG welding, hemming, bonding, flow hole bolting, self-piercing rivets or friction stir welding.

With two further innovations, the new SL remains true to its tradition as technological trend setter:

MAGIC VISION CONTROL is a new intelligent, high-efficiency windscreen wiper/washer system. Its system of channels supplies water to the windscreen just in front of the wiper blade lip in the direction the wiper is moving. As a result, when spraying one no longer sees a water splash on the windscreen to disrupt one’s visibility, and yet the windscreen is kept perfectly clean.

The likewise unique FrontBass system uses the free spaces in the aluminium structures in front of the footwell as resonance spaces for the bass loudspeakers. As a result the new SL features clear, crisp bass sounds that make possible a concert hall ambience even with the top down.

Both innovations are part of the extensive standard equipment of the new SL.

Breathing even more “life” into already live Mercedes SL 65 AMG requires a combination of great experience and craftsmanship. No doubt, the company MR Car Design from Erftstadt has both of them, because Marc Reilly and his team have already surprised with so many fantastic variation of even the most ingenious idea.

Originally, the 2005 SL engine hood made of carbon from Kicherer was implanted. And replaced rear bumper is more than presentable result of the internal AMG Facelift. Black fender lights on the front and middle rear brake light – of course, also black – were no surprise.

The software optimization allows Erftstadt to provide the SL 65 with additional 80 hp, respectively 110 Nm of torque. In this context, the “regeneration” of the intake path is to be praised. Logical consequence of this power increase is lifting of the Vmax-lock. By now a lowering by 30 millimeters is indispensable.

The muscle car is carried by 20-inch forged rims from Carlsson. By the way, Erftstadt tuner allows the Mercedes to “communicate” with environment through the in-house exhaust system with 450 kW / 612 hp and 1000 Nm of nominal torque, and the appropriate sonorous sound.

In the interior, in turn, the attention is attracted to the custom-made Black Series dial lenses. As for the rest, there is practically all the same, because the absolute optimum was delivered.

Mercedes-AMG, the high-performance division of Mercedes-Benz, has developed one of the most powerful engines ever to be installed in a production car. The six-liter twin-turbo V12 powers the SL65 AMG roadster, CL65 AMG coupe and S65 AMG sedan.

Developing 604 horsepower, the AMG limited-production V12 models can accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in a breathtaking 4.2 seconds, with impressive power all the way to their electronically-limited 186 mph top speeds. Perhaps more important in everyday driving than sheer horsepower is the twin-turbo’s enormous torque of 738 lb.-ft., available from 2,000 all the way to 4,000 rpm.

A Major Boost for Mercedes V12 Power
The standard 5,439-cc Mercedes-Benz V12 engine has been enlarged by installing a special crankshaft that increases the piston stroke from 87 to 93 millimeters. With larger heat-resistant forged pistons as well (up from 80 to 82.6 mm), the AMG 12-cylinder displaces 5,980 cubic centimeters, or about 365 cubic inches. To provide more fuel and air for the larger engine, revised AMG camshafts provide higher intake valve lift and longer opening duration, and fuel injectors with larger openings are used in conjunction with higher fuel pressure – 3.8 bar or 54 pounds per square inch. Larger turbochargers push more air into the engine, with boost set at 1.5 bar or 22 psi.

Hot V12 Engine Stays Cool
Air that’s pressurized by the turbochargers gets hot as a result, so it’s circulated through a special water-cooled intercooler before entering the engine. A dedicated radiator for the intercooler is 70 percent larger than on the standard v12, resulting in intake air temperatures that run about 25 percent cooler than the standard engine. This denser intake air plays a major role in increasing the engine’s horsepower and torque. All the additional power means a lot more heat, so new oil jets in the aluminum block spray more oil onto the underside of each piston. With a larger oil pump, a larger oil cooler circulates more cooling oil throughout the engine.

One Man, One Engine – Individual Hand Craftsmanship
Each new AMG engine is hand-assembled one at a time by an expert technician at Mercedes-AMG in Affalterbach, Germany. Mercedes-AMG follows a philosophy of “one man, one engine,” which means that a single technician – identified by the signature plate affixed to the engine – is responsible for the complete assembly of an AMG high-performance engine from start to finish. With the utmost care, the craftsman installs each and every part – from the crankshaft, connecting rods and pistons to the intake system, wiring harness and oil fill-up. Each engine is bench-tested to ensure consistent quality and maximum performance.

The SL 63 AMG is hardly to be over-bid in puncto sportyness in its class. No matter how one looks to the changes, with the INDEN Design Black Saphire change kit was added now in optics and performance a generous portion of driving fun.

This vehicle is an unusual concept – already at first sight the Black Saphire convinces of INDEN with a Design, which connects and to an unmistakable overall view leads futuristic and sporty elements in such a way.

The productionquality of the body components and their fitting accuracy are here excellent. To the body equipment belongs a front spoiler bumper, which slides perfectly along the body and which supports the look again. Thus not yet enough: there are fenders with ventilation openings, a complete hood with air intakes, sidesmolder-learn, to examine a tail apron with diffuser, a tailspoiler as well as rear widenings.
The body kit has a value of 19.900 euro for additional 3,500 euros you can get a hood, for 800 euros the tail diffuser in carbon and for 999 euros a front Flap of PE in addition.
The assembly of the body parts and the various adjustment work is separately calculated with 8,000 euros and the lacquer finish inclusive putty work with 7,500 euros.

Thus INDEN Design proves the experience in the body area again and successfully uses the know-how.
Now the SL goes into a new round, because after the vehicle was outwardly revised, also new for example the sharpened wheel set.

A further important contribution to the exclusive optics and performance makes the multipart Black Saphire light alloy wheels (13,200 euros inclusive sport tires) in 20 inch. These were installed in the quantity 11×20 inch and 13×20 inch with 275/30 R20 and 325/25 R20 high speed tire of Dunlop.

So that the driver can also use the required potential, a modified controlling (1,550 euros inclusive installation) of the ABC chassis makes a sinking for the body possible.

Starting from 70km/h the chassis will be raised around 20mm for improvement of comfort and values of axlegeometry.
The full package is completed with a back driving camera (900 euros), day driving lights (420 euros) and suitable Black Saphire high-grade steel exhaust embellishers (1,200 euros).

When desired an increase in output on 560 HP and 670Nm can be accomplished with INDEN Design. As another extra INDEN Design worries also around the adornment of the interior.

For an adequate environment to feel good in the interior provides individual leather equipment, exclusive accessories for the cockpit and when desired also a Multimedia system.

A striking contrast of dark black premium leather and bright chrome trim fills the interior, with the sports steering wheel, shift lever and roof lining trimmed in black. Newly-designed seats have eye-catching arrow-type stitching and contrasting silver accents, including the vents of the AIRSCARF® system, which bathes occupants’ neck area with warm air in cooler weather when the convertible top is down.

All 2011 SL coupe/roadster models now come with an enhanced tire-pressure monitoring system, HD radio and a satellite navigation system with SIRIUS real-time traffic information. Non-AMG SL models are also equipped with Direct Steer, which uses variable-ratio gearing in the steering rack to provide impressive on-center steering feel, with even higher responsiveness beyond the first five degrees of steering angle.

SL Lineup Offers a Choice of V8 or V12 Power
A direct descendant of the legendary 300SL “Gullwing” of the 1950s, the current SL roadster line-up features the V8-powered SL550 (382 horsepower, 391 lb.-ft. of torque), the high-performance V8 SL63 AMG (518 hp, 465 lb.-ft.) and the V12-powered SL65 AMG (604 hp, 738 lb.-ft.).

The latest SL roadster lineup features dramatic styling with fenders that incorporate sharp, angular headlights and modified gill-type air outlets behind the front wheels. A front hood with two power domes (AMG versions have a large, single dome) and a bold single-lamella grille emphasize the width of the body and make a symbolic visual connection to the famous 1954 300SL, while larger side mirrors reveal built-in arrow-shaped turn signals.

At the rear, an air diffuser in the bumper adds a motorsports touch, and trapezoidal exhaust tips emphasize its width and suggest all the power on tap. The cockpit includes a three-spoke multi-function steering wheel and an instrument cluster with eye-catching red tachometer and speedometer needles that swing to the max position and back to zero whenever the ignition is turned on.

AIRSCARF Around the Head and Neck
All Mercedes-Benz SL roadsters are available with AIRSCARF, an innovative feature that can extend the open-air driving season into the cooler months. Another first from Mercedes-Benz, AIRSCARF is an extra heating system built into the driver and passenger seats.

The AIRSCARF neck-level heating system blows warm air from the head restraints of the driver and passenger seats, allowing occupants to cruise comfortably with the retractable hardtop open in cooler temperatures. Testing revealed that warming just a relatively small area around the neck dramatically improves comfort in cooler weather.

Standard on the SL65 AMG model (and optional on the SL550 and SL63 AMG), the AIRSCARF heating system even compensates for changes in air temperature and vehicle speed. AIRSCARF uses a heating element made of barium titanate, which heats up in a matter of seconds when electrical current is applied.

From Coupe to Roadster in 16 Seconds
At the push of a button, the SL’s retractable hardtop can be fully opened or closed in just 16 seconds, dramatically transforming the car from a quiet, weather-tight coupe to a top-down, open-air convertible. A hydraulic pump and 11 computer-controlled hydraulic cylinders power the system, and roof operation is controlled by a switch on the center console. Its folding “clamshell” design allows for a cargo area of 7.2 cubic feet when the top is down. With the top up, the trunk holds 10.2 cubic feet.

The World’s Safest Convertible
Widely acclaimed as one of the world’s safest convertibles, the SL provides sports car performance with all the built-in safety that’s expected from Mercedes-Benz. Since an open car can leave its occupants vulnerable in a rollover, Mercedes engineers met the challenge in the SL with the world’s first automatic roll bar. If sensors detect an impending rollover, the padded, leather-covered bar pops up, locking in place in a third of a second. It can also be raised or lowered by a console switch.

Shoulder belts are integrated directly into the seats for greater occupant protection, especially in rollovers. The Mercedes SL was also the first car with side airbags, which are part of a Supplemental Restraint System (a phrase first coined by Mercedes-Benz) that includes dual front airbags and emergency tensioning retractors that tighten the seat belts in a collision.

In Command with COMAND
A standard COMAND system includes a 6.5-inch color display screen, a hard-drive-based GPS navigation, an in-dash six-disc CD/DVD player and a four-gigabyte Music Register that holds around 1,000 MP3 tracks. This year, the SL audio system adds HD radio, and its navigation system comes with SIRIUS real-time traffic information. Music titles can be viewed on the COMAND display in the center console as well as a smaller display in the instrument cluster, and they can be selected with the buttons on the multi-function steering wheel. A convenient media interface makes it easy to connect an iPod, USB stick, memory card and other devices.

Major Stopping Power for All SL Models
Excellent stopping power for the SL is provided by large, four-wheel disc brakes enhanced with four-channel ABS anti-lock control. The SL550 is equipped with vented 13.8-inch front and solid 12.6-inch rear discs. Matched to its power and speed capability, The SL63 AMG comes with even larger 14.2-inch vented rotors up front and 13.0-inch vented rotors at the rear, while the SL65 AMG boasts vented discs that are another 1.2 inches in diameter.

ABC Active Suspension Gives Cat-Like Agility
The SL chassis uses a double-control-arm front suspension and the patented Mercedes-Benz five-link rear suspension. All SL models come with Active Body Control (ABC), the Mercedes-Benz active suspension. Virtually eliminating body roll in cornering, squat under acceleration and dive during braking, ABC active suspension solves the usual tradeoff between ride comfort and handling, so SL roadsters offer excellent comfort and league-leading handling.

On AMG models, special ABC struts with firmer damping and reworked systems such as ABS anti-lock brakes, Brake Assist, traction control and ESP stability control complement the enhanced AMG chassis.

SL63 AMG Features AMG-Designed V8
The SL63 AMG V8 boasts a wealth of exciting features derived from AMG’s highly successful racing efforts. Built almost completely from a high-strength silicon-aluminum alloy, the 518 hp engine features four valves per cylinder, variable valve timing, bucket-type cam followers (rather than rocker arms), and a variable intake manifold. The cylinder bores feature a twin-wire-arc-sprayed (TWAS) coating, a new process that results in impressively low friction and running surfaces that are twice as hard as conventional cast-iron cylinders. Designed exclusively by AMG, the engine shares no components with other Mercedes-Benz V8 engines.

The Award-Winning MCT Transmission – The Best of Both Worlds
Providing the direct feedback of a manual transmission with the total convenience of an automatic, the award-winning seven-speed MCT (for multi-clutch technology) with AMG Speedshift PLUS made its debut on the SL63 AMG. Featuring an innovative start-up clutch that replaces a conventional torque converter and runs in an oil bath, the seven-speed MCT transmission combines the direct connection of a manual gearbox with the lightning-quick automatic gear shifts of a Formula 1 race car. Thanks to its low rotational mass, the start-up clutch helps the transmission respond instantaneously and dynamically with no slip.

With four shift modes and an automatic rev-matching function, the MCT transmission offers impressive versatility and even faster shift times. The SL63 AMG also includes a Race Start feature, which helps maintain full-throttle acceleration and optimal traction during motorsports competition.

Exclusive AMG Styling, Inside and Out
The SL63 AMG is distinguished by unique body styling, 19-inch AMG alloy wheels, sports suspension and high-performance brake system. A muscular front bumper with large air intakes houses round fog lights ringed in chrome, and a “6.3 AMG” badge marks each front fender.

Contoured side skirts carry the aggressive lines of the front bumper to the rear, where an AMG rear apron incorporates an eye-catching air diffuser. A pair of twin tailpipes completes the exclusive look and sound of the new models. Inside the SL63 AMG, drivers are greeted by an AMG sport steering wheel with distinctive aluminum shift paddles and AMG multi-contour leather sport seats finished in special vertical stitching.

Even Higher Performance
The SL63 AMG is available with an optional performance package that can be identified by 19-inch AMG twin five-spoke forged light-alloy wheels and an AMG performance steering wheel. Under the skin, the performance package includes a limited slip differential, two-piece front brake rotors, and a track-calibrated ABC active suspension system – all optimized by AMG for the serious motorsports competitor. An SL63 AMG fitted with the Performance Package also comes with a higher electronically limited top speed of 186 mph.

Right in time for the industry trade fair Tuning World Bodensee, PRIOR design presented their latest creation – the PD-SERIES based on the Mercedes-Benz SL R230.

The self-set target of the Kamp-Lintfort company was making the “large” Mercedes-Benz roadster even more perfect. The PD-SERIES inspiration very clearly was the super sports car Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series. The result will excite every car enthusiast: Flowing lines, expressive curves, massive air inlets and muscular sides summarize the perfect PD-SERIES view.

Let us look at it in detail, starting with the front. This is where the superior width of the PD-SERIES hardly makes it possible for the viewer to avert his eyes from the overwhelming fenders. Still getting over the endorphin-filled moment surprise, the eye takes I the harmonious line flowing from the fender to the front area. Only few centimetres below the futuristic Facelift headlights, there is a front spoiler with large, greedy air inlets. The cowl with its many air inlets reaches up to the windshield supplying even high-performance motors with sufficient air.

The side area with its wide wheels is reminiscent of a muscular monster waiting to jump its prey. The side dills harmoniously connect the masculine sides to make the car look as if made from a single cast.

Going father around the vehicle, we can then see the rear, dominant due to the imposing wheel arches that make the SL seem impossibly wide. The large track of the PD-SERIES is connected by a perfectly rounded rear bumper from one wheel arch to the other, which in turn is equipped with a diffuser based on racing technology. It is available either as sight carbon or full carbon.

A specially developed wheel/tyre combination is available as a complete set in the following sizes:
Wheel rim PD1 (three-piece stainless steel outer bed, black finish), front axle 10×20 inch with 265/30R20, rear axle 12×20 inch with 305/25R20

Finally, Prior-Design makes it possible to lower the car mechanically as well as electronically (with integrated Airmatic). Using the above wheel/tyre combination, Prior-Design also recommends optimising the suspension tuning.

At the 1989 Geneva Motor Show Mercedes-Benz presented an SL which was a new car in every respect. The first models were the 300 SL, 300 SL-24 and 500 SL. Internally the series was designated R 129. Unlike the predecessors, its production did not take place in Sindelfingen, but in Bremen, for capacity reasons.

Straightaway the response was extremely positive, and shortly after the presentation it was foreseeable that the planned annual production capacity of 20,000 units would be stretched to the limit for years and delivery periods of several years would have to be accepted.

The SL face has captured a permanent slot in the Mercedes-Benz model hierarchy over the decades. The new SL re-interpreted the traditional basic shape of the grille: within the radiator grille, organically integrated into the bonnet, the Mercedes star was complemented by horizontal strips made of anodised aluminium. Chief designer Bruno Sacco had done an excellent job. The stylistically assured, no-frills lines of the slightly wedge-shaped body, the flared wheel arches for the wide-base tyres, the half-spoilers forward of the front wheels, a very slanted windscreen, the skilfully modelled rear end and the standard-fit light-alloy wheels produce an exceedingly harmonic overall effect. The aerodynamic fine touches, including underbody and airflow through the engine compartment, added up to a fuel-saving, speed-increasing Cd of 0.32 with the hardtop mounted. A Cd figure of 0.40 was measured for the open-top car with closed side windows.

“Car Design Award”
Hardly a year after its launch the SL was decorated with the international Car Design Award. The SL was the top choice of an eleven-member jury of journalists from ten countries, assisted by a representative of the city of Turin and one from the Piedmont region. The jury stated as reason for the award: “In the Mercedes-Benz 300 – 500 SL the ensemble of safety innovations …, exemplary ergonomic solutions, and stringent adherence to the traditional design culture of the manufacturer’s brand is convincing. The new SL embodies the most valuable elements of up-to-date industrial design, without losing the flair that distinguishes every sports cabriolet.”

High torsional stiffness
The prerequisite for the proper operation of the fully automatic folding soft top under all conditions is the torsional stiffness of the body, which leaves nothing to be desired in this respect. To reduce the vibration and torsion characteristics typical of open-top cars, additional diagonal struts are fitted in the particularly critical areas of the body. In the front end the front axle carrier is connected with the door sills by two specially shaped struts. In the rear end two tubular struts between the door sills and the spare wheel recess serve the same function. Owing to these measures the torsional stiffness versus the previous model could be improved by around 30 percent and a saloon-like overall stiffness achieved.

New standards were set by this car also in the area of safety. The results of Mercedes-Benz’s rigorous frontal and rear-impact crash tests for the open-top vehicle were sensational and a clear proof of the scrupulous precision with which the developers had worked. The resistance to side impact went far beyond what the law required and once again set trends for the sensible design of all details, for instance the overlapping of the doors with the sills, the cross-bracing beneath the seats, including the stiff sides of the transmission tunnel, or the high-strength steel tubes inside the A-pillars, which can withstand a roof impact. This two-shelled structure of the front roof frame in conjunction with the bonding of the windscreen to the body results in very great stability even if a one-sided load is applied to the roof frame.

An integral part of the safety concept is the automatic roll-over bar which was realised in the SL for the first time in an automobile and has the purpose of protecting the occupants’ survival space in the event the car overturns. So as not to impair open-top driving pleasure with a permanently installed, rigid rollbar, a flexible solution was realised which activates the roll-over protection only if needed. When not in use the safety bar, consisting of a U-shaped high-strength steel tube foam-padded with polyurethane, is deposited in front of the soft-top compartment, closing off the rear compartment towards the back and forming a level surface with the top well lid. When a roll-over threatens, the sensor-controlled roll-over bar is electromagnetically triggered, raised into position by the force of pre-compressed springs within 0.3 seconds and secured by pawls. The high-strength centre pillars, connected over a large area with the rear longitudinal members, serve as basis for mounting and as support. In addition to automatic triggering in an emergency, by means of a switch the driver can choose to raise and lower the bar slowly, with a hydraulic element carrying out the action.

Extremely sturdy integral seats
The most advanced feature of the interior design were the integral seats of the SL, which are a technical masterpiece in their design and an important part of the safety concept. The seat frame and backrest are made of various special magnesium alloys executed in thin-wall casting technique. They incorporate the three-point seat belt with belt tensioner, the belt height adjustment, coupled with the head restraint adjustment, and electric stepper motors for adjusting reach, height and tilt of the seat cushion and backrest. Another important feature is the automatic positive locking of the backrest. The resistance of the seat in a crash is many times higher than the possibly occurring forces.

Twenty patents for solutions to various details went into this seat; its creator received the Paul Pietsch Prize and high prize money in acknowledgement of his pioneering work in 1989.

Fully automatic folding soft top
The newly designed electro-hydraulic fabric top with which the SL is equipped as standard offers especially great operating convenience. Simply by operating a switch, within 30 seconds the soft top can be opened, folded and deposited in the narrow soft-top compartment, or taken out of the compartment and closed. Simultaneously, the side windows and the roll-over bar are lowered and then returned to their starting positions. Up and closed, the top is taut and smooth in all directions – the vacuum that exists above the roof while on the go should not cause the top to balloon after all, and perfect operation of the roll-over bar under the closed soft top also must remain guaranteed.

The energy to operate the soft top is provided by an electrically driven hydraulic pump which is accommodated in the spare wheel recess together with the oil reservoir. The microprocessor-controlled motions are monitored with the aid of 17 limit switches, and the hydraulic system has 15 pressure cylinders and eleven solenoid valves.

The exemplary solutions include the draught-stop. Unlike the electro-hydraulic soft top it was not viewed as a high-tech marvel, but its development also involved attention to complex details. The draught-stop consists of a framed, breathable screen which can be quickly attached to the roll-over bar and, when raised, appreciably enhances ride comfort when the soft top is open by minimising wind noise and draught. With the draught-stop, leather jackets and caps for driver and front passenger are a thing of the past, as is tousled hair for the ladies. Even high speeds cause no draught problems anymore, and open-top driving at low temperatures becomes a real show. Today the innovative draught-stop, for which the inventors hold four patents, is practically a taken-for-granted component of many convertibles around the world.

The standard-fit hardtop now was made of aluminium, and despite larger windows weighed 34 kilograms or about 10 kilograms less than the coupé roof of the previous model. As it is, uncompromising lightweight design and the extensive use of high-strength sheet steel had enabled realising a bodyshell weight of 405 kilograms, which was only 20 kilograms more than that of the previous model despite substantial improvements in structural safety.

Electrically operated windows and the electro-pneumatic central locking system, both standard equipment in all SL models, serve comfort and convenience. The basic equipment of the 500 SL also included electric steering column adjustment for optimal adapting of reach, height and tilt to the driver.

A new suspension
The suspension conformed in principle to the familiar suspension design of the saloons of series 201 and 124. The new SL models thus had a coil-spring shock absorber strut independent front suspension with anti-dive control and wishbones, gas-filled shock absorbers and stabiliser, and a modified multi-link independent rear suspension with anti-squat and anti-dive control, coil springs, gas-filled shock absorbers and stabiliser. This guarantees excellent handling characteristics. Many components were adapted to the altered installation conditions and stresses and loads in the SL; the axle geometry also was matched to the special demands on the driving characteristics and comfort.

As an optional extra a newly developed auxiliary system also was available that represented the most advanced suspension technology realisable at the time and combined three subsystems with each other. The purpose of this level adjustment and regulation on front and rear axle was to maintain an always constant vehicle level with the engine running. The automatic speed-dependent level adjustment function lowers or raises the vehicle level depending on the actual speed; for driving on poor roads the level can be increased by 30 millimetres; at a speed of more than 72 km/h the normal level first can be set, and from a speed of more than 122 km/h then lowered by 15 millimetres. The third component, the Adaptive Damping System ADS, used adjustable shock absorbers and a complex electronic control to adapt the damping fully automatically, as needed, and within fractions of a second, to the driving state determined by five sensors. All in all the sprung mass vibrations are reduced depending on vehicle load, road condition and style of driving. This was virtually a preliminary stage of the active suspension which was developed to production standard in 1999 in the C 215-series coupé.

In keeping with their sports credentials, all models of the R 129 series were fitted as standard with 15-hole light-alloy wheels (diameter: 40.64 centimetres) and wide-base tyres size 225/55 ZR 16. The larger wheels compared with the previous models permitted installing large brakes appropriate to the improved performance of the SL. New were the front fixed-calliper disc brakes featuring four pistons, two pairs with different diameters. This design, used for the first time in a Mercedes-Benz passenger car, ensures even brake pad wear and better utilisation of the pad volume. The front and rear disc brakes are internally ventilated. The anti-lock braking system ABS was part of the standard configuration of all three models.

From September 1995 on the Electronic Stability Program ESP® was available for the SL 500 as an optional extra. It was standard equipment for the SL 600. From December 1996 on the six-cylinder models also could be fitted with ESP® if they were ordered with the electronically controlled automatic transmission available from June 1996. Another world first serving active safety also saw use at this time: the Brake Assist BAS, installed as standard from December 1996 in all models of the 129 and 140 series. BAS is able to detect emergency braking and, if need be, automatically build up the maximum brake boosting effect in shorter time than before. This distinctly reduces the braking distance of the vehicle. In early April 1998 the Electronic Stability Program ESP® was included in the standard equipment of the SL 500 and SL 60 AMG; in August 1999 it also became a standard feature in the two six-cylinder models, SL 280 and SL 320.

The first facelift
Visually and technically updated SL models were presented at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in September 1995. The facelifted variants were distinguished by a modified body design, more extensive standard equipment, and more refined engineering. The body design modifications were of a minor nature and ranged from redesigned front and rear bumpers, colourless glass covers for the front directional indicators, and a subtle change in the radiator grille, which now had six slats. The side skirts, like the bumpers, no longer were painted in a contrasting colour, but in the colour of the car, and had modified breathers, a prominent feature serving to identify the facelifted models. Other new items were the bichromatic tail lights with their uniform red appearance, and 12-hole light-alloy wheels, the standard for all SL models. As an optional extra a glass roof with sunblind was available; it could be fitted in place of the usual aluminium hardtop. In the interior, the door trim, steering wheel and seat design were modified.
Headlamps with xenon gas discharge lamps first introduced a few months earlier in the 210-series E-Class now also were available in the SL. Compared with conventional halogen headlamps the new xenon lamps were twice as intense and ensured better, brighter illumination of the roadway. Dynamic headlamp range adjustment prevents dazzling oncoming traffic.

A world first was introduced simultaneously in the SL-Class and S-Class. As first carmaker Mercedes-Benz was able to present an improved cruise control which could regulate the speed down to 30 km/h; the updated SL models were fitted with this function as standard.

The second facelift
In 1998 the second facelift followed. But it involved only a few modifications to the design of the SL: purpose of the discreet stylistic touch-ups was to give the sports car an even more dynamic look. This was achieved with a slightly changed rear end in which the now monochromatic glass covers of the tail lights presented themselves in a gentler look with only three ribs. A new oval tailpipe trim for the exhaust system including adjustments on the bumper emphasised the sporty appearance. A round shape also was the dominant feature of the new exterior mirrors, which were adapted to the design of the SLK and were the most important external identifier of the facelifted models. The door handles and detachable body parts of the facelifted SL models had a high-gloss finish in the colour of the car. The size and design of the wheels also were modified: the SL models now had newly designed five-hole light-alloy wheels and size 245/45 ZR 17 tyres as standard.

Proven engine technology right from the start
All three engines of the original SL portfolio in the R 129 series feature a closed-loop catalytic emission control system as standard. The entry-level engine was the two-valve-per-cylinder six-cylinder engine (M 103) in the 300 SL (1989 to 1993) with an output of 140 kW. It had already served well in the saloons of the 124 and 126 series, but was revised for use in the SL. The most important improvements were a redesigned combustion chamber, which reduced the emissions of unburned hydrocarbons, and a modified emission control system. By eliminating the close-coupled primary catalytic converter, which was subject to high thermal stresses, and enlarging the cross-section of the exhaust pipes and the now two-pipe catalytic converter it was possible raise the rated output of the engine from 132 kW to 140 kW. The top speed was 228 km/h; 9.3 seconds was the figure stated for 0 to 100 km/h acceleration.

From 1989 to 1993 there was also the 300 SL-24 model featuring a newly designed four-valve-per-cylinder six-cylinder engine (M 104). This engine is based on the M 103, and its parts are mostly identical with those of the two-valve counterpart. New were the four-valve cylinder head and map-controlled electronic intake camshaft adjustment, used for the first time at Mercedes-Benz. In conjunction with a higher compression ratio and an electronic ignition system with anti-knock control, the result was a 29 kW increase in output over the M 103 to 170 kW. The performance of the 300 SL-24 was thus noticeably sportier despite almost identical fuel consumption (top speed: 240 km/h, 0 to 100: 8.4 seconds), but had to be bought at an additional cost of almost DM 10,000. The successors to these two models in the years 1993 to 1998 were the SL 280 (2.8 litres displacement, 142 kW) und SL 320 (3.2 litres displacement, 170 kW), both with four-valve-per-cylinder six-cylinder engines from the M 104 series.

The car that attracted particular attention at the 1989 Geneva Motor Show was the 500 SL, which as top-of-the-range model had a 240 kW 5.0-litre four-valve-per-cylinder V8 engine (M 119), making it the most powerful Mercedes-Benz production car at the time. The design of this engine was based on the 5.0-litre M 117 light-alloy engine, which had stood the test of over ten years’ time. Crankcase, crankshaft and connecting rods were extensively modified to obtain the higher output figures. The two four-valve cylinder heads were of new design and had adjustable intake camshafts like the four-valve-per-cylinder six-cylinder. Decisive for the marked increase in output (plus 60 kW), along with conversion to the four-valve-per-cylinder technology, were the anti-knock control, a new two-box air filter with reduced suction resistance, and, not least of all, changes in the emission control system: like the two six-cylinder units the four-valve V8 had no more primary catalytic converter, and a two-pipe catalytic converter with a larger cross-section. This power potential gave the 500 SL impressive performance to outclass its predecessor: from a standing start the top-of-the-range model sped from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.2 seconds; the top speed was electronically limited to 250 km/h.

In autumn 1992, when the 600 SL appeared, the engine of the 500 SL was slightly revised. The version of the four-valve V8 with Bosch KE-Jetronic used previously was replaced by the “standard-deck engine” which was already being used in the 500 E (W 124) and in the saloons and coupés of the S-Class (140 series). Characteristic features of the new engine were the modified crankcase, whose deck height was now identical with that of the 4.2-litre unit, and the electronic injection system Bosch LH-Jetronic with mass air flow sensor. As in the V12 engine, full load enrichment was dispensed with here to reduce the pollutant emissions – a measure affecting not only the SL, but all other car models with V12 and V8 engines too. In the case of the 5.0-litre engine this meant the loss of 4.4 kW output (now 235 kW). But for all practical purposes this hardly made itself felt in the performance.

From June 1993 onwards the 500 SL was called the SL 500 owing to a reform of the nomenclature; this reversal of the model designations applied as a matter of principle to all Mercedes-Benz models.

The twelve-cylinder arrives
In October 1992 the dream of many a friend of the SL came true: three-and-a-half years after the presentation of the R 129 series, it too was now available with the 6.0-litre V12 engine, which had already proved itself in the saloons and coupés of the 140-series S-Class. To further reduce pollutant emissions the injection system was modified and full-load mixture enrichment dispensed with. In the 600 SL, known from June 1993 as the SL 600 and, all told, available from 1992 until 2001, the most powerful engine in the passenger car sales range mobilised 290 kW and made brilliant performance possible: at 6.1 seconds the acceleration was slightly better than that of the 500 SL; the top speed likewise was governed at 250 km/h. The twelve-cylinder was a model of smoothness and turbine-like power delivery. Above all, its imperturbability in high speed regions and the impressive and simultaneously refined manner in which it reached top speed characterised the 600 SL.

The large extra charge of more than DM 60,000 compared with the 500 SL made its ownership a matter of prestige. But for that the new top model of the series was fitted as standard with a whole range of extras that only could be had at an additional charge in the 500 SL. Apart from the Adaptive Damping System ADS with level control on the front and rear axle the basic equipment comprised, for example, cruise control, automatically dimming interior mirror, headlamp cleaning system, automatic climate control, leather appointments and seat heating. Externally, only the model plate and two “V12″ emblems in the vicinity of the air outlets behind the front wheel cut-outs distinguished the 600 SL from its sister models.

The 1995 facelift brought improvements to the engines and transmissions of the SL 500 and SL 600 models. From September 1995, both featured a five-speed automatic transmission with torque converter lockup clutch, a completely new development that replaced the previous hydraulically controlled transmission. The heart of this technical wonder was an electronic transmission control that quickly and automatically adapted shifting behaviour to every driving situation and permanently exchanged data with the electronic engine management. Apart from these forward-looking innovations the automatic transmission was appreciably more compact and lighter than comparable five-speed units. The engines were revised once more to cut fuel consumption and pollutant emissions further. For this purpose the 5.0-litre V8 engine got a modified crankshaft, optimised valve timing, lighter pistons, individual ignition coils for each cylinder as well as an improved electronic engine management system called Motronic ME 1.0. Fewer changes were made to the design of the V12 power plant and merely concerned the configuration of the ignition coils and the electronic engine management. As a result of the various modifications to the engine and the use of the new automatic transmission, the fuel consumption of the SL 500 and SL 600 could be reduced by ten percent with output remaining unchanged.

From June 1996 the new electronically controlled automatic transmission also was available for the six-cylinder models SL 280 and SL 320 – as an optional extra for the 2.8-litre variant, as standard equipment for the SL 320.

V-engines instead of in-line engines
The 1998 facelift ushered in the V-engine generation with six and eight cylinders, which took the place of the six-cylinders of the M 104 series and the V8 unit of series M 119 also in the SL. The engines featured three-valve-per-cylinder technology and dual ignition for better emission values. They also excelled in lower cost of production.

Outputs ranged from 150 kW in the SL 280 (M 112, top speed 232 km/h, 0 to 100 km/h in 9.5 seconds) to 165 kW in the SL 320 (M 112, 238 km/h, 8.4 seconds) to 225 kW in the SL 500 (M 113, 250 km/h, 6.5 seconds). The top-of-the-range SL 600 continued to use the tried-and-tested twelve-cylinder engine (M 120) with 290 kW. The SL 280 was now the sole model of the series still available with a five-speed manual transmission, all sister models had automatic transmission as standard.

Mercedes-AMG GmbH
Anyone still not satisfied with the output and prestige afforded by the eight-and twelve-cylinders could turn to AMG in Affalterbach, not far from Stuttgart. Since 1990 a cooperation agreement existed between AMG and Daimler-Benz AG. Effective 1 January 1999 AMG then became a 51-percent subsidiary of the then DaimlerChrysler AG and took the name Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

AMG offers power-hungry customers several alternatives. When the first vehicles developed on the basis of the cooperation agreement came out on the market in 1993, the first SL model was the SL 60 AMG (M 119, 6.0-litre V8, 280 kW), which was sold until 1998; a purely AMG version with the same engine had existed earlier, from 1991 to 1993, under the name AMG 500 SL 6.0.

Models SL 55 AMG (M 113, 5.5-litre V8, 260 kW, 1999 to 2001) and the top-of-the-range model with twelve-cylinder engine, the SL 73 AMG (M 120, 7.3-litre V12, 386 kW, 1999 to 2001), followed. The latter’s maximum torque of enormous 750 Newton metres propelled the vehicle from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds. The top speed of both cars was electronically limited to 250 km/h, but the limit could be neutralised on customer request. All power transmission components of the AMG models, from automatic transmission to rear axle, were adapted to the higher loads.

The AMG bodystyling package with integral fog lamps in the bumper emphasises the tense dynamics of the sports car even more, without laying hand on the clear lines of its design. The large AMG light-alloy wheels (diameter: 45.72 centimetres) added a further dash of unmistakable sportiness to the looks.

The special models of the R 129 series Special SL models became available for the first time in the R 129 series. Extended and modified appointments distinguished them from the series-produced cars. This made them exclusive, offered a price advantage, and simultaneously boosted SL sales. Between 1995 and 2001 there were 17 special series built in differing numbers, from ten to 1515 units.

In 1995 the “Special Edition” with a production run of 630 units debuted. It was available as SL 280, SL 320 and SL 500. The distinguishing features included an exterior finished in brilliant silver, combined with red soft-top fabric.

In the same year the special series “Mille Miglia” was released. It served as VIP and escort vehicle at the Mille Miglia Storica in Italy. There were ten Mille Miglia units in all based on the Special Edition, but with further distinctive features such as an unobtrusive black-and-white chequered flag on the ornamental grilles of the front wings.

In 1998 another “Special Edition” arrived, available for all models except the SL 60 AMG; 500 units were built. Obsidian black was chosen as exterior paint finish; the leather seats were in designo red with black topstitching. The SL 280 was given the five-speed automatic transmission as standard equipment.

A further small VIP series was released on the occasion of the 1999 Mille Miglia Storica. It was based on the SL 55 AMG and twelve units were built. One year later the “SL Edition” stimulated the brand’s sports car sales; 708 units were built – the third-highest volume for an R 129 SL special series, and available as SL 320 and SL 500. The “Final Edition”, also dating from 2000 – 674 units were produced (all models with the exception of the SL 55 AMG and SL 73 AMG) – already heralded the approaching discontinuation of the series. Special VIP models again were available that year: the “Formula One Edition” (20 units) based on the SL 500 on the occasion of the Indianapolis Formula One race, and twelve units of the “Mille Miglia” of 2000. In 2001 the last special “Mille Miglia” model in the R 129 series followed, with thirteen units built this time based on the SL 600.

Various special series were created upon the request of individual markets, for instance the “40th Anniversary Roadster Edition” (USA, 1997, 750 units of models SL 320 and SL 500 and 35 AMG SL 60 Limited Edition models), in celebration of the coming of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster in 1957; “designo MB UK” (England, 1998, 150 units), “designo MB Japan” (Japan, 1998, 67 units), “designo Vintage Edition UK” (England, 2000, 49 units, models SL 280 and SL 320), “designo Heritage Edition UK” (England, 2000, 49 units, models SL 280 and SL 320), “Silver Arrow Edition USA” (USA, 2001, 1515 units of model SL 500, 100 units of model SL 600) and “Silver Arrow Edition UK” (England, 2001, 100 vehicles, 500 SL model).

The successor arrives
In July 2001 the Mercedes-Benz SL 500, the first model of the new SL series, the R 230 series, had its world premiere. In the same month the last of a grand total of 204,940 units of the R 129 series rolled off the assembly line at the Bremen plant. In terms of overall volume the first SL manufactured in Bremen was not quite as successful as its predecessor from the R 107 series (237,287 units); but if average annual production is compared, the R 129 series with some 16,500 units takes a very clear lead. The most successful model of this series was the five-litre variant equipped with the four-valve V8 engine M 119, of which a total of 79,827 were produced from 1988 to 1998. The rarest variant by far is the SL 280 with V6 engine, which served as entry-level model for the series from 1997 and rolled off the assembly line only 1704 times.

The optional designo magno night black matt paint finish accentuates the exclusive, sporty appearance of the SL Night Edition, while the special designo graphite paint finish makes the SLK Grand Edition a real eye-catcher. Both of these new special models combine the advantages of a roadster with those of a coupé, and are both thoroughbred sports cars and comfortable everyday cars.

Masterpieces to dream of – the theme for the two new special editions of the Mercedes-Benz SL and SLK sports car series. The special designo magno night black paint finish specially developed exclusively for the SL Night Edition is particularly effective with the dramatic design of the SL. 19-inch AMG five-spoke light-alloy wheels in a two-tone, high-gloss finish, silver-painted front brake callipers with the Mercedes-Benz logo and darkened headlamps/tail lights accentuate the exclusive status of these special models. A badge on the front wings identifies the Night Edition.

Black nappa leather and shining chrome trim provide striking contrasts in the interior, with numerous fine details interacting to produce an intriguing effect. The newly designed seats have arrow-shaped seams and silver-coloured contrasting features. The sports steering wheel, shift lever and roof lining are in black. The trim strip of the draught-stop has a high-gloss finish complemented by the silver-coloured vents of the AIRSCARF® system, which bathes the driver in warm air when the soft top is down in cool ambient temperatures.

SLK Grand Edition – in stylish grey
The exclusivity of the SLK Grand Edition is underlined by the elegant designo graphite paint finish. Other highlights include exclusive 18-inch light-alloy wheels with five triple spokes, silver-coloured fins on the bonnet, headlamps matching the paint finish and a third brake light.

In the interior of the SLK Grand Edition, the AIRSCARF® system included as standard ensures that the open-top season can last all year. The driver and passenger are cosseted by finely coordinated materials in a restrained, stylish grey. The newly designed seats are upholstered in basalt grey nappy leather, with arrow-shaped seams and designo pearl leather on the side bolsters. The effect is complemented by the tone-in-tone, grey seat belts. Basalt grey nappa leather is also used for the door linings, with a harmonious contrast provided by the designo pearl leather armrests. Finely executed, red topstitching on the seats and door armrests create a special look. Colour-coordinated trim in designo pearl leather – with the embossed Grand Edition emblem above the glove compartment – rounds off the interior. The floor mats bordered in the same shade of grey also bear this logo.

The SL Night Edition and SLK Grand Edition can be ordered now. Depending on the engine variant, the additional cost for the special model is between 3700 and 5200 Euro for the SL Night Edition and between 2300 and 3500 Euro for the SLK Grand Edition. The special paint finishes cost an additional 3640 Euro for designo magno night black and 1800 Euro for designo graphite (German list prices incl. VAT).
