E-Class Cabriolet
Positive signals underline the Mercedes-Benz presence at the 2010 North American International Auto Show. The highlight of the opening day was the debut of the new E-Class Cabriolet, which is celebrating its world premiere in Detroit

The highly appealing and emotionally charged Cabriolet is the latest addition to the successful Mercedes-Benz E-Class line-up. The open-top two-door model, features a classic fabric soft top, making for a stylistically pure cabriolet feeling. Viewed from the side, the new model is an intriguing proposition – with its clear proportions and a flawless cabriolet silhouette.

MERCEDES GP PETRONAS Formula One Team presentation
Over 600 guests, including 200 media representatives and 200 Mercedes-Benz employees, visited the Mercedes-Benz Museum, to see the launch of the team and the unveiling of the new Silver Arrows livery.

The event opened with a welcome speech by Dr. Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars before Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg presented the new Silver Arrows livery for the 2010 season on last year’s car. The new silver and green livery creates a true marriage between the heritage of the Silver Arrows and the team’s title partner PETRONAS.

Mercedes-Benz F 800 Style
Mercedes-Benz presented the F 800 Style research vehicle at the Geneva Motor Show. This one-off five-seater executive saloon combines efficient drive technologies with unparalleled safety and convenience features as well as an emotive design idiom.

Its all-new, flexible multi-drive platform – either for electric drive with fuel cells or for a plug-in hybrid – is a world-first for large saloons. Both variants make locally emission-free mobility possible for a premium car, while at the same time providing a dynamic driving experience.

New-generation R-Class
Taking center stage at Mercedes press conference on the 2010 New York International Auto Show was the world premiere of the new-generation R-Class. The original SUV tourer has been extensively updated.

The overall impression in particular has benefitted significantly from the completely redesigned front section, which borrows elements both from Mercedes-Benz saloons and SUV models. In addition to the fresh exterior, the “twenty-ten” model year R-Class also impresses with a number of distinctive interior features.

This basic design enables high levels of traction, firstly because the dynamic shift in axle load toward the rear axle that occurs during acceleration is harnessed to deliver more drive torque to the rear wheels. Secondly, the multi-disc differential lock is also able to shift the drive torque between the front and rear axles, varying the split as the road conditions dictate. Consequently, intervention by the ESP, 4ETS or ASR electronic control systems can be delayed for as long as possible and the bulk of the drive torque converted into tractive power, even on slippery roads. All control system interventions go virtually unnoticed, yet drivers still know straight away if they are driving on the limit, as a yellow warning symbol will flash in the instrument cluster. This serves as a prompt to adapt the driving style to the road conditions.

The drive mechanism’s permanently engaged design offers key advantages over other systems that first need to diagnose a lack of grip before activating the all-wheel drive. The 4MATIC will have already made use of this valuable time to start transmitting drive torque via the wheels to the road.

All-wheel drive is not a substitute for winter tyres
Like any other all-wheel drive system, the 4MATIC has to abide by the laws of driving physics. The fundamental rule is that a tyre is only able to transfer a certain level of overall force to the road surface. If a particularly high degree of longitudinal force is required during acceleration or braking, for example, the available lateral force is reduced. When cornering, the reverse applies: now a large amount of lateral force is required to keep the vehicle on course, while the longitudinal force potential is restricted. The engineers’ skill in designing the drive mechanism and fine-tuning the control systems lies in their ability to exploit these correlations in such a way as to ensure the best possible handling characteristics under all conditions. The frictional coefficient µ describes the physical grip between the tyres and the ground. This figure is high on a dry road (µ = 0.9) and low on a snow-covered road (µ = 0.3).

Despite all the engineers’ efforts, it is ultimately the drivers themselves who determine how safe they are out on the road. They should always adapt their driving style in accordance with the wintry conditions and ensure that their vehicle is suitably equipped; winter tyres are absolutely essential here.

Pulling away with ease on ice and snow
When starting off in wintry conditions, certain road surface conditions are automatically detected and the interventions of the 4ETS electronic traction control system adjusted so as to achieve the greatest possible acceleration while minimising wheel slip, ensuring optimum directional stability in the process. This strategy also allows the vehicle to pull away under the most adverse conditions, such as when one side of the vehicle is on an icy slope (µ-split) or both wheels on either the front or rear axle have limited grip (µ-jump).

When starting off on µ-split, one side of the vehicle is on snow or ice and the other on asphalt. This means there are major differences in the coefficient of friction between the left and right-hand side of the vehicle. On all vehicles with open axle differentials, the wheel with the smallest friction coefficient limits the maximum transferable drive power. If the drive power exceeds the maximum transferable power, the wheels on snow or ice will start to spin and the vehicle would be unable to start off.

4ETS instantly detects this situation and prevents the wheels from spinning by building up exactly the right amount of pressure in the wheel brakes. As the wheel with the higher friction coefficient is now braced by the brake force at the wheel with the smaller friction coefficient, the 4MATIC model starts to move. After pulling away, the wheel characteristics are closely observed and the brake pressure regulated in such a way that, as far as possible, there is no difference in speed between the individual wheels. The braking force applied by 4ETS effectively simulates a higher coefficient of friction on the side of the road covered with ice or snow; ideally, this will match the coefficient of friction on the asphalt side. This produces an optimal inter-wheel locking effect at the axle differentials, resulting in the maximum possible acceleration on µ-split surfaces.

Starting off on “µ-jump” surfaces – where one of the vehicle’s axles is entirely on ice or snow and the other on asphalt – is hampered by the large differences in friction coefficient between the front and rear wheels. On vehicles with an open inter-axle differential, the axle with the lower coefficient of friction determines the transferable drive power. Whilst the multi-disc differential lock with its basic locking torque of 50 Newton metres does have a balancing effect, it is unable to compensate for these extreme differences in friction coefficient. Here again, both wheels on the axle with the lower coefficient of friction start to spin if the drive power exceeds the maximum transferable drive power at this friction coefficient. The 4ETS resolves this problem by instantly detecting spinning wheels and braking them. In this way, the braked axle with the smaller friction coefficient braces the axle with the higher friction coefficient – and the 4MATIC model starts to move.

Assured handling on wintry roads
On twisting roads covered with snow and ice, vehicle stability is primarily controlled by the 4ETS system’s acceleration skid control function regulating engine torque. The 4ETS control thresholds are adjusted according to the driving situation based on the vehicle’s longitudinal and lateral dynamic readings as continuously measured by the ESP® sensor system. To prevent the vehicle from tail-skidding, the longitudinal force when cornering must be controlled by means of engine torque regulation in such a way that there are sufficient reserves of lateral force at all times. In order to comply with this physical correlation, when cornering on road surfaces with a low friction coefficient vehicle stability is mainly controlled by the ESP and ASR acceleration skid control systems intervening to ensure that there is always sufficient lateral force in reserve.

Initially, only enough engine torque to allow the tyres to develop sufficient lateral force is transmitted to the wheels on the outside of the bend. If the ASR control function cannot restore directional stability, the ESP system will intervene by applying the brakes to stabilise the vehicle.

In contrast to the control mechanisms triggered when cornering, considerably more longitudinal force can be provided when accelerating in a straight line, as the tyres hardly have to transfer any lateral force. What is important here is that the tyres can work in the optimum µ-slip curve range. In order to achieve this, the control thresholds for engine torque regulation are raised in this driving situation. When driving on snow-covered or icy roads with low friction coefficients, the multi-disc differential lock in the transfer case takes effect, producing an inter-axle locking torque of 50 Newton metres in the powertrain. This locking effect boosts traction considerably without having any negative impact on the control systems. When the final-drive ratios are factored in, this allows 150 Newton metres to be delivered to the wheels.

In certain wintry conditions it may become necessary to deactivate the control systems using the “ESP OFF” switch. This is the case where high slip values are required at the wheels – when powering out of deep snow, for instance, either with or without snow chains. Even in “ESP OFF” mode, drivers can still count on the full support of the control systems when braking. Once back on a road surface with a normal covering of snow, the control systems should be reactivated again.

This is the ninth time that AutoScout24, Europe’s largest online automobile marketplace offering around 1.8 million vehicles, has conducted an online survey to discover Europe’s most popular cars. More than 230,000 participants from seven countries cast their votes to choose their favourites from among 343 vehicles.

When it came to voting for Europe’s most popular car, the answer could not have been clearer: the majority of the voting public opted for the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG super sports car. A unique and exciting style combined with an exquisite level of engineering – all of which evoke memories of that sports car legend from the 1950s, the 300 SL – enabled the gullwing to take top honours in this category. On top of this, the SLS also emerged as the clear winner in the super sports car and coupé category.

The most popular vehicle in the van and compact van category, according to the online community, was the Mercedes-Benz R-Class. By voting in this way, the participants acknowledged the fact that the R-Class not only boasts an exciting design, but also meets the requirements of contemporary-minded, leisure-oriented people looking for a versatile car that also provides agile handling. It combines first-class comfort for up to seven people, a high degree of variability and a prestigious character.

In Germany, other Mercedes-Benz vehicles were also voted into the top places. The C-Class won in the medium-size category and the E-Class in the intermediate category, while the E-Class Cabriolet picked up the most votes in the cabriolet category.

Furthermore it offers a very spacious seating capacity. The R-Class therefore remains the most comfortable way to experience up to seven passengers, with a maximum of luxury and a real feeling of space.

With a fuel consumption figure of 7.6 l/100 km (combined NEDC consumption), the R 300 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY requires around 7 percent less fuel than its predecessor, the R 300 CDI without BlueEFFICIENCY technology.

R 300 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY: low fuel consumption MPV
As with all BlueEFFICIENCY models from Mercedes-Benz, the R-Class features a whole range of measures to reduce fuel consumption. In addition to the direct-injection diesel engine and the low-friction powertrain, these measures include weight reductions achieved through the use of high-strength and ultra-high-strength steels in the bodyshell and weight-optimised light-alloy wheels. Aerodynamic exterior mirrors and underbody panelling lower drag, while 235/65 R 17 tyres reduce rolling resistance. A controlled fuel pump and energy-saving electrohydraulic power steering also lower the energy requirements. A display indicating the current fuel consumption and a fuel consumption computer enable the R-Class driver to check fuel efficiency at any time, and adapt the style of driving as necessary.

Economising can be fun: the new V6 diesel with 195 kW (265 hp) and 620 Nm
The new R 350 CDI 4MATIC is entering a particularly sporty league, and combines the high performance of a V8 model with the low fuel consumption of an economical V6 variant. It is happy with just 8.5 litres of diesel (combined NEDC consumption) per one hundred kilometres, thereby undercutting its predecessor by 0.8 litres – yet is able to offer significantly enhanced performance. While previously the maximum performance topped out at 165 kW (224 hp), the V6 diesel engine now boasts 195 kW (265 hp) as well as massive torque of 620 Newton metres. This powerful package is celebrating its world premiere in the new R-Class, and enables the sportiest of all diesel-powered R-Class models to achieve effortlessly superior levels of performance. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes 7.6 seconds, while the top speed is 235 km/h.

This evolutionary stage of the successful V6 diesel engine was realised with improved engine management in the form of new-generation control units and new software, new sensors and actuators, and more efficient after-treatment in the maintenance-free diesel particulate filter system with reduced back-pressure. In addition to more effective cooling of recirculated exhaust gas using a variable bypass valve, the in-engine measures include a reduction of the compression ratio from 17.7:1 to 15.5:1, an optimised VNT turbocharger with low-friction shaft bearings for greater agility and high output, new injection nozzles and revised ducting in the intake tract. A whole package of measures has resulted in substantial fuel savings: these include generally lower in-engine friction, more efficient thermal management, an improved compound oil pump and modified cylinder head cooling.

R 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC: as clean as a petrol model
With the R 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC, Mercedes-Benz is offering one of the cleanest diesel models in the world. The V6 engine achieves an output of 155 kW (211 hp) and substantial torque of 540 Nm. Compared with its predecessor, this model also manages to achieve reduced fuel consumption and lower emissions while providing enhanced performance. Equipped with highly-effective AdBlue© exhaust gas after-treatment, the compression-ignition engine consumes an average of 0.3 of a litre less, at 8.4 litres (combined NEDC consumption) of diesel per one hundred kilometres, generating in the process the same level of emissions as a comparable petrol engine. As a result, this model currently already meets the emission values planned for 2014 according to the EU6 standard. BlueTEC is a technology developed by Mercedes-Benz for the effective reduction of emissions by diesel vehicles, especially nitrogen oxides. In this process, AdBlue®, a non-toxic, aqueous urea solution is injected into the stream of exhaust gases. This releases ammonia, which breaks down up to 80 percent of the nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen and water in the downstream SCR catalytic converter (Selective Catalytic Reduction).

Effortless power delivery with high drive comfort: The petrol variants in the R-Class
The range of petrol engines has three variants, and gives the R-Class a high level of drive comfort together with effortless power delivery and a moderate fuel consumption. The V6 petrol engine of the rear-wheel drive R 300 develops 170 kW (231 hp), accelerates the R-Class from zero to 100 km/h in 9.6 seconds and provides a top speed of 222 km/h. The combined NEDC fuel consumption is 11.1 l/100 km. The all-wheel drive R 350 4MATIC with a 3.5-litre V6 engine develops 200 kW (272 hp) and a maximum torque of 350 Newton metres. Despite this extra output and performance (top speed 230 km/h, 0-100 km/h in 8.3 seconds), the R 350 4MATIC consumes only 0.5 l/100 km more (combined NEDC fuel consumption) compared with the R 300. This low difference in consumption once again demonstrates the high efficiency of the 4MATIC all-wheel drive system.

In the top-of-the-range R 500 4MATIC, the 5.5-litre V8 engine with 285 kW (388 hp) and a maximum torque of 530 Newton metres guarantees impressive performance figures. A sprint from zero to 100 km/h is absolved in 6.3 seconds, with a top speed of 250 km/h.

Geared up: 7G-TRONIC as standard in all models
All R-Class models are equipped with the latest-generation of the innovative
7G-TRONIC automatic transmission. The Fuel Efficiency variant of the seven-speed transmission has new bearings and couplings. Different oil pressures and a new, low-friction oil help to reduce friction and churning losses. The new torque converter with slip-reduced lockup clutch likewise improves efficiency and aids fuel economy. In addition, standstill decoupling lowers fuel consumption. This technical feature reduces transmission input torque in “D” when the car is at rest, for example at traffic lights. This lowers the stress on the engine, making for lower fuel consumption, better vehicle acoustics, greater comfort at standstill and smoother idling. The slip-controlled clutch is engaged as soon as the driver releases the operating brake, ensuring no delay or quality compromise when the vehicle moves off.

Stability pact: the well-proven suspension of the R-Class
The R-Class has a dynamically active and comfortable suspension with high safety reserves as standard. All model variants have steel springs, and in the 5+2-seater variants and the top R 500 4MATIC model self-levelling rear air suspension is included as standard. This self-levelling rear air suspension is available as an option for all other models. The AIRMATIC package with air suspension, the Adaptive Damping System and level adjustment improves both ride comfort and handling dynamics, and is likewise optionally available for all R-Class models.

These features include the unique anticipatory occupant protection system PRE-SAFE®, a complete restraint system with eight airbags, crash-responsive NECK-PRO front head restraints, a tyre pressure loss warning system and adaptive brake lights. Safety is also enhanced by high-performance telematic systems such as the Audio 20, Audio 50 APS or COMAND APS with an extremely user-friendly interface, as well as a raised seating position. This gives the driver a good view of the traffic conditions, enabling him or her to recognise potential dangers more quickly and easily.

Everything considered: integral Mercedes-Benz safety concept
The comprehensive Mercedes approach to integral safety also applies in the new R-Class. This trailblazing safety philosophy goes well beyond compliance with standardised crash test regulations. It concerns itself with all aspects of driving – everything that is important for the safety of the vehicle occupants and other road users. The Mercedes safety concept divides these aspects into four phases:

1. Safe driving: avoiding danger, warning and assisting in good time
2. In the event of danger: acting in an anticipatory manner, e.g. with PRE-SAFE®
3. In an accident: provide protection as needed
4. After an accident: avoid even worse consequences and make rapid assistance possible

Comprehensive restraint system for the best possible occupant protection
Combined with the front and rear deformation zones, the high-strength occupant cell forms an effective basis for occupant protection systems that include:

- adaptive, two-stage airbags for the driver and front passenger
- sidebags in the front, and in the middle row of seats as an option
- windowbags across all three rows of seats
- NECK-PRO crash-responsive head restraints for the driver and front passenger (optionally NECK-PRO luxury head restraints)
- 3-point seat belts on all seats
- belt tensioners and belt-force limiters for driver and front seat passenger
- seat belt tensioners and single-stage belt-force limiters in the middle and rear seat rows
- ISOFIX child seat anchorages for up to three child restraint systems in the centre seat row
- belt height adjustment for the driver and front passenger
- belt status display for rear-seat passengers in the instrument cluster
- automatic child seat recognition (optional) with deactivation of the front passenger airbag if a special Mercedes-Benz child seat is fitted

The electronic guardian angel: PRE-SAFE® has a preventive effect
Occupant protection in the new R-Class begins well before an accident. The Mercedes-Benz invention PRE-SAFE® is able to activate preventive measures reflexively when it recognises the danger of an accident, so that the belts and airbags can protect the occupants to best effect during the collision. This multiple award-winning technology is standard equipment.

PRE-SAFE® uses a synergy of active and passive safety: it is networked with Brake Assist (BAS) and the Electronic Stability Program ESP®, whose sensors can recognise potentially critical handling situations and send corresponding information to the electronic control units within milliseconds. These sensor data are also used for preventive occupant protection by PRE-SAFE®. The PRE-SAFE® protective measures are reversible: if the accident is avoided, the preventive belt tensioning is relaxed automatically, and the passengers can return the seats and sliding sunroof to their original positions. The preventive occupant protection is then immediately ready for use again.

In case the worst happens: Daimler trains the fire services
Like the R-Class, all automobiles from Mercedes-Benz are among the world’s safest. This high protection potential is the result of Daimler AG’s comprehensive approach. Of course, however, protective measures reach their limits if the parameters make control intervention more difficult and – in the case of very serious accidents – if access to and recovery of the occupants is sometimes no longer possible via the vehicle doors.

Even in these extreme circumstances, where the focus is on “patient-compatible recovery”, the company follows its comprehensive safety philosophy and assists the emergency services with their work. This is because the effectiveness of post-accident assistance, where emergency doctors, paramedics and the fire services work together to recover the occupants as rapidly and carefully as possible, depends absolutely on preparation. To this end, Daimler AG offers the fire services practical training events during which they can learn and apply a wide variety of recovery techniques using the latest models. In addition, Daimler provides detailed recovery guidelines and so-called ‘rescue cards’ online. These are in accordance with the standards set by the VDA workgroup, and show recovery techniques specific to the different model series.

Tradition: 40 years of accident research at Mercedes-Benz
This close cooperation between Daimler safety specialists, the emergency services and the police has a long tradition: in 1969 Mercedes-Benz started its ongoing accident research programme, in which engineers evaluate collisions involving the company’s vehicles in the Stuttgart region soon after they occur – and in special cases even worldwide. Again and again, the findings of the accident researchers provide important information on components that can be specifically improved in terms of passive safety. The investigators have examined around 4000 accidents since their work started 40 years ago. Each crash is documented with an 80-page accident report. This continuously growing database will enable vehicles to be made even safer in the future.

The focus of the designers was on the completely restyled front section, with an emphasis on width and a horizontally structured bonnet to make the vehicle appear more harmonious, muscular and dynamic.

Expressive: the new front section is full of character
At the front end of the R-Class, the bonnet, wings, radiator grille, headlamps and bumper have been completely redesigned. On request, in conjunction with bi-xenon headlamps, a chrome insert enhances the integrated LED daytime driving lights. The character of the R-Class can also be underlined by an optional, strikingly contoured, chrome-look underguard.

The new bonnet has more marked contours, and is more arrow-shaped at the front edge. The wider, higher radiator grille is more steeply angled, while the bumper cladding is more striking, with clear-cut lines. The side recesses in the bumper, where the fog lamps and daytime driving lights are located, are spaced well apart and give the front section an impression of width. The lines of the side skirts are harmoniously continued forward in the updated wings and grille. The new, dynamic “face” of the R-Class is particularly impressive. The newly designed headlamps blend perfectly into the front end, emphasising the horizontal lines. The “eyelids” continue the beltline along the flanks, and are arranged above the chromed headlamp tubes to produce an assertive, concentrated gaze.

Perfect proportions
Dynamism is also the order of the day where the side aspect is concerned. With the coupé-like lines of the window area, the luxury tourer distinguishes itself attractively from conventional MPVs. Eye-catching details of the clearly contoured flanks include the larger exterior mirror housings, which are set well away from the doors and are held by slim stems. The strikingly designed mirror housings in the vehicle colour have integrated indicator repeaters in the form of a stylised arrow. The new wheel designs are equally eye-catching: the range includes light-alloy wheels in 5-spoke, 5-twin-spoke or 10-spoke designs in sizes from 43.2 to 53.3 centimetres (17 to 21 inches).

Perfect finish: the rear section of the R-Class
The rear section harmoniously continues the design idiom of the front, with a new bumper cladding, modified tail lights, a diffuser and integrated tailpipe trim emphasising the width with more horizontal structures, as at the front. The bumper also picks up the line of the side skirts, giving the effect of a continuous line running around the entire bodywork. Tail lights with LED and fibre optic technology, new exterior contours and horizontally arranged lighting functions lend the finishing touches to the rear section.

The 2010 model year R-Class looks particularly attractive in the new “diamond white” paint finish.

designed for a relaxed, safe driving environment, the saloon offers five seats as standard in both the normal and long-wheelbase versions, but four, six or even seven-seat configurations are also possible.

Seating arrangement: from 2-2-0 or 2-3-0 and 2-2-2 right up to a 2-3-2 system
The space provided behind the front seats is so generous that up to three child safety seats can be installed at the same time. If only four seats are required, the centre backrest can be folded down to serve as an armrest. Alternatively, the six-seater version features a console as standard in place of the centre seat. This also enables the R-Class to shine with four luxurious individual seats.

R-Class customers who particularly like variety are able to produce other formations by opting for two individual seats in the rear. With three passengers seated in the middle row, this gives a total seating capacity of seven. Groups of up to six people choose the popular 2-2-2 seating system, which provides all the occupants with an individual seat. The R-Class comes with partially power-adjustable seats for driver and front passenger as standard, while as an option front passengers can also enjoy the luxury of actively ventilated and heated multicontour seats with full power adjustment and memory function.

The R-Class also reveals another benefit in the form of its large, versatile luggage compartment: this has a capacity of up to 1950 litres, while the long-wheelbase version boasts 2385 litres. In all five-seat variants there is a separate stowage compartment beneath the load compartment floor, while the optional EASY PACK tailgate, which can be operated remotely by means of a switch or key, also makes access to the luggage compartment easier. This makes the R-Class the most variable and spacious vehicle in the entire Mercedes-Benz passenger car product range.

Refined atmosphere for maximum driving pleasure
The high-class interior – which seems even more spacious when fitted with the optional panoramic glass sunroof – makes use of new materials and colour combinations to enhance the high-class appeal and quality of this luxury tourer. At the same time they underline the sense of wellbeing which is so typical of a Mercedes-Benz interior. Available interior appointments include the upholstery combination of “Aspen” fabric and breathable, soft-touch ARTICO man-made leather.

Two-tone interior appointments are a new addition to the range: this is where the base colour almond beige can be combined with the contrasting shade mocha brown. Alternatively, the base colour alpaca grey combined with contrasting dark basalt grey is also available. Both colour combinations are used on the dashboard, steering wheel, centre console, seats, door linings and floor coverings. When choosing ARTICO or leather appointments at the same time – in this case the seats feature a new transverse and linear piping design – the piping is finished in a contrasting colour. As alternatives to the aluminium trim with a dark longitudinal grain or the chrome trim in silver shadow, it is also possible to order luxurious wood trims in high-gloss brown eucalyptus, high-gloss brown burred walnut or high-gloss anthracite poplar.

The cockpit impresses with its newly designed instrument cluster. The dials and needles have a white background, and are even easier to read thanks to a three-dimensional effect.

That’s entertainment – telematics and multimedia in the R-Class
The telematics of the R-Class impress with intuitive and user-friendly operation, high performance and great versatility. The luxury tourer is fitted as standard with the Audio 20 CD system with CD changer. This includes a 12.7 cm (5-inch) colour display, a twin tuner for better radio reception, speed-sensitive volume control, eight loudspeakers and a keypad for entering telephone numbers and radio frequencies. A hands-free system with Bluetooth interface and an Aux-in connection for mobile audio devices such as an iPod are also integrated. On request, a Media Interface (UCI) is also available to connect an external music memory to the onboard electronics and the control system, so that music tracks are shown in the instrument cluster and the colour display in the centre console, and can be conveniently accessed using the keys in the multifunction steering wheel. The battery of the audio device is charged at the same time.

Passengers can also enjoy full, concert-hall surround-sound with the optional, latest-generation Harman Kardon® Logic7® sound system. With a high output, a digital signal processor (DSP) and Dolby Digital 5.1, this ensures an outstandingly clear listening experience. As an optional extra, there is also a rear seat entertainment system with two large 20.3 cm (8‑inch) screens, a DVD player and two wireless headsets for greater freedom of movement, plus a remote control unit.

One particularly impressive optional extra is the COMAND APS system, for which the customer receives free navigation map updates covering 39 European countries for a period of three years after first registration. In addition to the features of Audio 20 CD, this multimedia system has a 6-disc CD changer, a high-resolution 16.5 cm (6.5-inch) colour display, a 4 GB memory for MP3 files (Music Register) and a memory card slot (SD cards). The HDD navigation system with various map displays and automatic traffic tailback reporting (TMC) rapidly guides the driver to the desired destination. Impressive appearance with new highlights
Dramatically redesigned for the 2011MY, the R-Class is noticeably more assertive, underlining the unique character of this multi-talented vehicle. The designers paid special attention to the front section, with an emphasis on width and a horizontally structured hood to make the vehicle appear more harmonious, muscular and dynamic.

Expressive: the new front section emphasizes character
At the front of the R-Class, the hood, fenders, radiator grille, headlamps and bumper have been completely redesigned. The new hood has more defined contours, complemented by an arrow-shaped front edge. The wider, higher radiator grille is more steeply angled, while the rear fascia incorporates striking, clear-cut lines. The side recesses in the bumper — where the fog lamps and daytime driving lights (or optional LED daytime running lights) are located — are spaced well apart and emphasize width. The lines of the side skirts are harmoniously continued forward in the updated fenders and grille. The new, dynamic “face” of the R-Class is particularly impressive. The redesigned headlamps blend perfectly into the front end to further emphasize the horizontal lines. The “eyelids” follow the beltline contours along the sides, and are arranged above the chromed headlamp housings to produce an assertive, concentrated gaze.

Perfect proportions
Sleek design is reiterated in the side profile as well. With the coupé-like lines of the window area, the R-Class represents a unique departure from traditional crossovers. Eye-catching details of the clearly contoured sides include the larger exterior mirror housings, which are set well away from the doors and supported by slim stems. The strikingly designed mirror housings in the vehicle color have integrated indicator repeaters in the form of a stylized arrow.

Perfect finish: the rear section of the R-Class
The rear section seamlessly continues the design idiom of the front, with a new bumper design, modified tail lights, a diffuser and integrated tailpipe trim emphasizing the width with more horizontal structures. The bumper also echoes the sharp contours of the side skirts, giving the effect of a continuous line circling around the exterior. As a finishing touch, the tail lights feature LED and fiber optic technology as well as horizontally arranged lighting functions. The 2011 model year R-Class looks particularly attractive in the new “diamond white” metallic paint finish.

Sitting comfortably in spacious luxury
If there were a versatility test for automobile interiors, the R-Class would undoubtedly be a candidate for first place. The R-Class offers a variety of seating options: designed for maximum comfort, the crossover offers six seats as standard or an optional seventh seat in the U.S. (European models offer five seats as standard in both the normal and long-wheelbase versions plus an available four seat configuration). The second row can also be equipped with a storage console between the two standard captain’s chairs.

Seating arrangement: from four passengers right up to seven passengers
The space provided behind the front seats is so generous that up to three child safety seats can be installed at the same time. If only four seats are required, the 3rd row seats can be easily folded down for more storage.

R-Class customers who prefer more seating capacity may opt for a seventh seat located in the second row. With three passengers seated in the middle row, this gives a total seating capacity of seven. Groups of up to six people choose the popular 2-2-2 seating configuration, which provides each occupant with an individual seat. The R-Class comes with 8-way power adjustable front seats with driver-side 4-way pneumatic lumbar control for driver and front passenger as standard, while as a special order option front passengers can also enjoy the luxury of actively ventilated and heated seats.

The R-Class also features another benefit in the form of its large, versatile 85 cu. ft. luggage compartment. The optional electronic tailgate — which can be operated remotely by means of a switch or smart key — also makes access to the cargo area easier. This makes the R-Class the most variable and spacious vehicle in the entire Mercedes-Benz passenger car product range.

Refined atmosphere for maximum driving pleasure
The high-class interior – which seems even more spacious when fitted with the optional Panorama glass sunroof – makes use of new materials and color combinations to enhance the high-class appeal and quality of this luxury crossover. Upholstery offerings include black, almond beige or ash in both MB-Tex or optional leather. The seats feature a new transverse and linear piping design. The interior also features standard burl walnut trim.

The cockpit impresses with its newly designed instrument cluster. The dials and needles have a white background, and are even easier to read thanks to a threedimensional effect.

That’s entertainment – telematics and multimedia in the R-Class
The telematics of the R-Class impress with intuitive and user-friendly operation, high-performance and great versatility. The 2011 R-Class features the COMAND system as standard equipment with an in-dash 6-disc CD/DVD changer and highresolution 6.5-inch color display. The COMAND system also includes a compass function, which is shown in both the instrument cluster and the central display plus a Bluetooth interface and an Aux-in connection for mobile audio devices are also integrated. As part of the optional Premium1 package, the COMAND system also includes a 4 GB memory for MP3 files (Music Register), an SD memory card slot and a hard disk drive navigation system that holds various map displays. SIRIUS real-time traffic rapidly helps guide the driver to the desired destination. Also included in the Premium1 package is a voice-operated control system for accessing many vehicle functions, and a universal media interface to connect an external music memory or iPod to the onboard electronics and the control system. Music tracks are displayed both in the instrument cluster and the color display in the center console, and can be conveniently accessed using the keys in the multifunction steering wheel or on the dashboard. This system also enables charging of the audio device at the same time.

These features include the unique anticipatory occupant protection system PRE-SAFE®, a complete restraint system with eight airbags, crash-responsive NECK-PRO front head restraints, and a tire pressure loss warning system. New for 2011, the optional Blind Spot Assist makes lane changes significantly safer by monitoring the sides of the vehicle and alerting the driver with visual and audible warnings whenever they signal a lane change with another vehicle alongside. Safety is also enhanced by the sophisticated telematics system “mbrace”, the COMAND system with an extremely user-friendly interface, as well as the raised seating position. This gives the driver a good view of the traffic conditions, enabling him or her to recognize potential dangers more quickly and easily.

Everything considered: integral Mercedes-Benz safety concept
Naturally, the comprehensive Mercedes approach to integral safety applies to the 2011 R-Class. This trailblazing safety philosophy goes well beyond compliance with standardized crash test regulations and concerns itself with all aspects of driving – everything that is important for the safety of the vehicle occupants and other motorists. The electronic guardian angel: PRE-SAFE® has a preventive effect
Occupant protection in the 2011 R-Class begins well before an accident. The Mercedes-Benz invention PRE-SAFE® is able to activate preventive measures reflexively when it recognizes an impending accident, so that the belts and airbags can provide optimal protection during the collision. This multiple awardwinning technology is standard equipment.

PRE-SAFE® uses a combination of active and passive safety: it is networked with Brake Assist (BAS) and the Electronic Stability Program ESP®, whose sensors can recognize potentially critical handling situations and relay information to the electronic control units within milliseconds. This data is also used for preventive occupant protection by PRE-SAFE®. Important to note is that the PRE-SAFE® protective measures are reversible: if the accident is avoided, the preventive belt tensioning is relaxed automatically, and the passengers can return the seats and sliding sunroof to their original positions. The preventive occupant protection is then immediately ready for use again.

Tradition: 40 years of accident research at Mercedes-Benz
Comprehensive safety has a long tradition at Daimler: in 1969 Mercedes-Benz started its ongoing accident research program, in which engineers evaluate collisions involving the company’s vehicles in the Stuttgart region soon after they occur – and in special cases even worldwide. Time and again, the findings of these accident researchers provide important information on components that can be specifically improved in terms of passive safety. The investigators have examined around 4,000 accidents since their work started 40 years ago. Each crash is documented with an 80-page accident report. This continuously growing database will enable vehicles to be made even safer in the future.

Drive for economy
In addition to the economical gasoline variant with customary effortless power delivery and high drive comfort, the optimized diesel engine further enhances the appeal of the R-Class.

R350 BlueTEC 4MATIC: as clean as a gasoline model
With the R350 BlueTEC 4MATIC, Mercedes-Benz continues to offer one of the cleanest diesel models in the world. The V6 engine achieves an output of 210 hp and substantial torque of 400 lb-ft. This model also manages to achieve reduced fuel consumption and lower emissions while providing enhanced performance. Equipped with highly-effective AdBlue© exhaust gas after-treatment, the compression-ignition engine consumes an average 18 mpg city and 24 mpg highway, generating in the process the same level of emissions as a comparable gasoline engine. As a result, this model currently already meets the emission values planned for 2014 according to the EU6 standard. BlueTEC is a technology developed by Mercedes-Benz for the effective reduction of emissions by diesel vehicles, especially nitrogen oxides. In this process, AdBlue®, a non-toxic, aqueous urea solution is injected into the stream of exhaust gases. This releases ammonia, which breaks down up to 80 percent of the nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen and water in the downstream SCR catalytic converter (Selective Catalytic Reduction).

Effortless power delivery with high drive comfort: The gasoline engine in the R-Class
The V6 gasoline engine gives the R350 4MATIC a high level of drive comfort together with effortless power delivery and a moderate fuel consumption. The 3.5- liter V6 gasoline engine of the all-wheel drive R350 4MATIC develops 268 hp and a maximum torque of 258 lb-ft, producing fuel economy figures of 14 mpg city and 19 mpg highway.

Stability pact: the well-proven suspension of the R-Class
The R-Class has a dynamically active and comfortable suspension as standard equipment. Both model variants have steel springs in front with self-leveling rear air suspension as standard equipment. Also available as a special order option, the AIRMATIC system with air suspension, the Adaptive Damping System and level adjustment improves both ride comfort and handling dynamics.

The new-generation R-Class has the appearance of being cast from a single mould. The completely redesigned front end with its restyled bonnet, wings, radiator grille, headlamps and bumper gives the entire vehicle a harmonious, dynamic and powerful presence. On request, the front end of the R-Class can be further enhanced by a chrome clasp with integrated daytime driving lights in conjunction with bi-xenon headlamps. Drive system with a high economy and fun factor
In addition to the smooth, powerful and comfort-enhancing petrol engines adopted from the preceding model, optimised diesel units increase the attractiveness of the R-Class. The basic R 300 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY model impresses with its harmonious power delivery and consumes only 7.6 l/100 km**. The R 350 CDI 4MATIC combines the performance of a V8 model with the fuel economy of a V6 variant, and is happy with 8.5 litres** of diesel per 100 kilometres. The diesel engine developing 195 kW (265 hp) and a torque of 620 newton metres catapults the most sporty of the diesel R-Class models from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.6 seconds, with a top speed of 235 km/h. And the R 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC is one of the cleanest diesel ­models worldwide. This model with AdBlue© emissions control consumes 8.4 litres** of diesel per 100 kilo­metres, and has emissions at the same, low level as a comparable of a petrol model. As a result, this model already meets the EU-6 exhaust emission standard envisaged for 2014. All R-Class models are equipped with the latest-generation 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission. This fuel-efficiency transmission has bearings and clutches designed for minimum friction. Modified oil pressures and a new low-friction oil reduce friction and churning losses. The new torque converter operates particularly efficiently, and therefore saves fuel, thanks to its slip-reduced lockup clutch. In addition, the power decoupling function at standstill in D reduces fuel consumption. This technical feature reduces the transmission’s input torque when the car is stationary, for example at traffic lights.

Extensive model range with nine basic versions
With a total of nine basic versions, the R-Class offers the widest model range in the premium touring saloon segment. Thanks to its attractive body design, comprehensive standard features and numerous individualisation options, the R-Class can be tailored to suit individual preferences. The seating variants provide a particularly wide scope: specifically designed for comfortable and safe touring, the saloon has five seats in both the standard and long-wheelbase versions, but configurations with four, six or seven seats are also possible. The R-Class offers a further advantage in the form of a large, flexibly usable luggage compartment: luggage capacity is up to 1950 litres in the versions with the standard wheelbase, and the long-wheelbase version provides 2385 litres. The optional EASY PACK tailgate with switch or key-operated remote control allows easier access to the luggage compartment. All this makes the R-Class the most variable and spacious model in the Mercedes-Benz passenger car range.

In the airy, high-quality interior, which gives an even more spacious impression with the optional panoramic glass sunroof, new materials and colour schemes improve value perception and quality even further. Standard features include an upholstery combination of Aspen fabric and breathable, pleasant-feeling ARTICO man-made leather. The interior colour schemes are new, with almond beige available in combination with mocha brown, or alpaca grey with basalt grey. Alternatively the interior can be enhanced even further with a two-tone colour scheme, in which case almond beige and black or alpaca grey and black form an interesting contrast.

The M-Class Grand Edition
The exterior of the M-Class Grand Edition is distinguishable by numerous attractive features. These include 48.3 cm (19-inch) light-alloy wheels in a Y-spoke design with tyre size 255/50 R19, blue-tinted thermal insulation glass all-round, dark-tinted headlamps and LED technology for the daytime driving lights and sporty, darkened tail lights.

Aluminium roof rails and an extensive chrome package with an AMG radiator grille and underguards at the front and rear round off the additional features. Standard equipment also includes PARKTRONIC and a metallic paint finish. On request the Grand Edition can be further enhanced with a paint finish in chromite black or diamond white, and 50.8 cm (20-inch) bicolor light-alloy wheels with 265/45 R20 tyres, options which are only available for this M-Class model. A bonnet with the powerdomes typical of sporty Mercedes-Benz models is standard equipment for the V8 models ML 450 CDI 4MATIC and ML 500 4MATIC, and is available as an optional extra for the other variants.

Sheer class: the interior of the Grand Edition
The feel-good atmosphere that is the hallmark of any Mercedes-Benz impresses in the interior of the sporty yet luxurious Grand Edition interior. The eye is treated to high-grade poplar wood trim and a black roof lining. At night the ambient lighting creates a pleasant and exclusive Grand Edition mood. The hard-wearing, breathable and pleasant-feeling ARTICO man-made leather upholstery with contrasting seams and raised piping is reserved exclusively for this model series, and ensures outstanding seating comfort. The dashboard in a 3D-look is also lined with ARTICO, while the centre door panels are lined with real leather. The sporty nature of this series is accentuated by an AMG sports steering wheel in leather with shift paddles, sports pedals of brushed stainless steel with rubber studs and stainless steel door entry panels. A Grand Edition emblem on the centre console provides the reference to exclusivity. A full leather interior is available on request, likewise with contrasting seams and piping. Comfort head restraints are included as standard.

In 1997 the M-Class was the first premium SUV
The M-Class is seen as the precursor to the modern premium SUVs, and is one of the most popular SUV models worldwide. Since the world premiere of the first model generation in 1997, more than one million examples have left the production lines in Tuscaloosa, USA. Two variants of the M-Class are available to cater to the different requirements of off-road drivers: in addition to the basic 4MATIC version with its electronically controlled off-road driving modes, the “Offroad-Pro Engineering package” can be ordered to make the M-Class capable of mastering even the most difficult terrain. Like all 4MATIC models, the M-Class has a special driving mode which counters critical behaviour when towing a trailer right from the outset, thereby decisively contributing to handling safety.

Grand Edition equipment package with a price advantage of 40 percent
The new Grand Edition equipment package is available for all models in the series with the exception of the ML 63 AMG. At the package price of Euro 3990, there is a price advantage of Euro 2670 compared to ordering the features individually for the variants with a V6 engine. The price advantage is Euro 2015 for the V8 models ML 500 4MATIC and ML 450 CDI 4MATIC.

The front-runners in this trend are the new BlueTEC models in the Mercedes-Benz R, E, ML and GL-Class ranges – the first diesel vehicles to meet the rigorous US exhaust emission standards in all 50 states. Golden Globe and Emmy winner Felicity Huffman (“Desperate Housewives”) has a Mercedes-Benz BlueTEC vehicle in her garage. “Sex and the City” star Sarah Jessica Parker and Gilles Marini as well as actresses Liv Tyler (“The Lord of the Rings”), Rosario Dawson (“A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints”), Christina Applegate (“Married with Children”) and Molly Sims (“Yes Man”) and singer Nicole Scherzinger have also switched to the world’s cleanest and most advanced diesel vehicles.

These vehicles combine exceptional performance and a long range with low fuel consumption which reduces their environmental impact. BlueTEC technology is an innovative emission control system which reduces exhaust emissions effectively and makes diesel vehicles so clean that they already fulfil the EU 6 regulations valid from 2014. At the same time, fuel consumption is up to 30 percent lower than that of comparable petrol engines.

Along with the BlueTEC models, the new S 400 HYBRID is also becoming a popular choice among movie and music stars. With this model, which was launched last year, Mercedes-Benz became the world’s first manufacturer to market a hybrid vehicle with a lithium-ion high-voltage battery. Taking center stage at today’s Mercedes press conference on the 2010 New York International Auto Show was the world premiere of the new-generation R-Class. The original SUV tourer has been extensively updated – including a completely redesigned front end.

A further highlight was the world premiere of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3. The racing version of the SLS AMG boasts stunning design and throroughbred racing technology, and makes its debut to coincide with the market launch of the road-going version. On top of that are three attractive new E-Class models for the U.S. market – the debut of the E 350 BlueTEC marks the arrival of another incredibly clean and efficient driveline variant of the successful sedan, which holds a 35 percent share of its market segment in the U.S. and remains the undisputed number one in its class. In May, the U.S. market will also welcome the new E-Class Cabriolet and the E-Class Wagon, which comes to market as the E 350 4MATIC with permanent all-wheel drive.

“Thanks to our successful model offensive, we are able to offer a uniquely wide range of tailor-made products designed to meet the needs of a demanding customer base,” said Dr. Joachim Schmidt, Head of Marketing and Sales for Mercedes-Benz Cars. “A significant proportion of this success is down to the innovative vehicle concepts with which Mercedes-Benz has repeatedly established and opened up new market segments,” he continued. “These include the R-Class, the original SUV tourer, which we have now extensively redesigned and upgraded.”

The most important exterior feature of the new-generation R-Class is the completely redesigned front end. It underscores the unique personality of this multi-talented vehicle that boasts an impressive array of inner values. These include the spaciousness of modern SUVs, as well as the comfort, exclusivity and prestige of Mercedes-Benz sedans. At the same time, the latest generation offers the interior versatility central to the R-Class vehicle concept, while also delivering the tough characteristics and all-wheel drive features of Mercedes-Benz SUVs.

New R 350 BlueTEC – one of the world’s cleanest diesels
When it comes to the engine range, Mercedes-Benz engineers placed particular emphasis on efficiency and environmental sustainability. With the R 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC, Mercedes-Benz is offering one of the cleanest diesel models worldwide. The V6 engine generates an output of 155 kW (210 hp) and 400 lb-ft (540 Nm) of torque. The diesel is equipped with AdBlue© exhaust treatment and, despite performance improvements, consumes only 8.4 liters per 100 kilometers (combined EU cycle), which is 0.3 liters less than its predecessor. It already fulfills the emissions requirements for the EU6 standard due for introduction in 2014. All gasoline and diesel versions of the R-Class fulfill the EU5 standard. In the U.S., the R 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC achieves 18/24 mpg city/hwy. and meets emissions standards in all 50 states.

New R 350 CDI 4MATIC – refined performance with reduced consumption
The new R 350 CDI 4MATIC (not available in the U.S.) combines the performance of a V8 model with the low consumption figures of an economic V6. It needs only 8.5 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers (NEDC combined), thus bettering its predecessor by 0.8 liters – despite its significantly improved performance. While the peak output previously stood at 165 kW (224 hp), the modified V6 diesel now delivers 195 kW (265 hp) and an exceptional torque of 620 Nm (457 lb-ft). The sportiest version of the R-Class with a diesel engine accelerates from 0 to 100 km in 7.6 seconds (0 to 60 mph in 7.5 seconds) and reaches a top speed of 235 km/h (146 mph).

Successful E-Class family – now also complete in the U.S.
At the end of the first quarter 2010, Mercedes-Benz continues to consolidate its position as the leading luxury brand in the U.S. A major part of this success belongs to new models like the GLK and the new E-Class Sedan and Coupe. The sedan is the most successful model in its class, commanding a 35 percent share of its market segment, which is double the figure at this time last year.

“We want to continue this success story, which is why the next few weeks will see us launch three new E-Class models onto the U.S. market,” says Ernst Lieb, President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA. “In summer, with the new E 350 BlueTEC, we are introducing another incredibly clean and efficient driveline variant of the successful sedan. Plus, we are also completing the E-Class family with the cabriolet, which goes on sale May 10, and the E-Class Wagon, which we are offering as the E 350 4MATIC with permanent all-wheel drive.”

The E-Class Wagon – elegance meets functionality
The E-Class Wagon combines the elegance, comfort and outstanding safety of the sedan with a unique level of functionality. Alongside the maximum load volume (70 cu. ft. / 2,000 liters), the key features of this versatile vehicle include its straightforward usability. One touch of a button is all it takes to open the tailgate automatically. Two simple movements are enough to fold the rear seat backs completely – freeing up all 6.5 ft. (two meters) of load space. And the third seat row is folded out in just three easy steps, converting the E 350 4MATIC to the only seven-seater in its class.

SLS AMG GT3 – stunning race version of the super sports car
Mercedes-Benz is bringing a particular highlight to New York with the world premiere of the new SLS AMG GT3, coinciding with the U.S. market launch of the SLS AMG. Volker Mornhinweg, Chairman of the Board of Mercedes-AMG GmbH: “With the GT3 racing version, we are opening up a whole new area of business for AMG, encompassing the development, production and sales of customer sports vehicles.” Thanks to its lightweight construction and superior dynamics, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG offers an excellent basis for a competitive race car. “With the stunning GT3 version, we are responding to strong demand from our customers for a vehicle to compete in this attractive motorsports series,” continued Mornhinweg.

With the GT3, AMG is once more demonstrating its unique experience gathered from more than 40 years of motorsports and its outstanding expertise in the development of unique, high-performance vehicles. The racing version of the new “Gullwing” is being developed and produced by AMG in close cooperation with HWA AG. HWA is contracted by Mercedes-Benz Motorsport to manage the company’s DTM team and is one of the most successful teams in international motorsport. Sales are scheduled to begin fall 2010, with homologation of the GT3 version due for completion in time for the 2011 racing season.

Numerous exterior features have undergone major changes, particularly the front and tail ends. The consistently horizontal lines and the pronounced contours make the car appear wider and lend it more dynamism. The R-Class therefore has a more dominant aura and conveys even more self-assuredness. A new special paint finish – diamond white BRIGHT metallic – has been introduced while the sanidine beige and carneol red metallic paint finishes are no longer available.

The front end has been extensively modified by a distinctively contoured bonnet with a pronounced V-shape, a large upright radiator grille with three louvres, which black painted with chrome highlight and a wide-design front bumper with daytime driving lights and front fog lamps. As an optional extra you can get LED daytime driving lights in conjunction with darkened bi-xenon headlamps.

The modified tail end incorporates horizontally divided fibre-optic tail lights with modified contours, LED indicator and rear fog lamps and at the rear bumper integrated reflectors to draw the car to a dynamic conclusion. The rear bumper lower section in black diffuser-style, is finished with integrated and chromed tailpipe trims.

At the side you can see exterior mirrors with a larger glass area and arrow-shaped LED indicator lights integrated in mirror housing.

The individually and exclusively designed interior has been upgraded, among other things, to the widening of the range of appointments colours. You can choose for example the interior colours almond beige/mocha brown or alpaca grey/basalt grey.

The R-Class can be even more dynamic designed with the optional AMG sports package interior. This package contains AMG sports seats in nappa leather, fully electrically adjustable front seats with multi-contour function, AMG sports steering wheel with shift paddles, floor mats with AMG “lettering, sports pedals in brushed stainless steel with rubber studs, and an interior lighting package.

Externally, can the exclusive aura of the R-Class extended with the chrome package (standard for R 500 4MATIC). The package contains thinks like chrome-look beltline trim strips or rub strips in vehicle colour with chrome insert.

Alternatively, you can choose the exterior sports package, which includes the chrome package and as additional points 20-inch) 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels, heat-insulating blue-tinted glass all round, steel front suspension and at the rear air suspension with level control.

The R-Class can be ordered as a 5-, 6- or 7-seater, depending on space requirements and the number of passengers to be carried. In addition, customers can choose from short- or long-wheelbase models. The W251 with a short wheelbase has a load compartment capacity of between 550 and 1950 litres, while the V251 with a long wheelbase offers a load compartment between 633 and 2385 litres.

Following the facelift, the R-Class will be available with Blind Spot Assist as an optional extra. The system is activated from the instrument cluster and operates between 30 and 250 km/h. Another optional extra are the NECK-PRO luxury head restraints.

On the engine side gets the R 350 CDI 4MATIC a power upgrade to 265 hp, with reduced consumption and lower CO2 emissions. The R 350 CDI 4MATIC consumes 8.5 liters per 100 kilometers in the future with a CO2 emissions of 223 g / km. The sales release is set to 04.05.2010. The new generation R-Class stands at the dealer showrooms from 18.09.2010.

The R-Class is 4.94 meters long and weights around 2.2 tonnes. For the first time comes the 3.0 liter six-cylinder diesel, with 190 (R 300 CDI), 211 (R 350 CDI BlueTec) and 265 hp (R 350 CDI). The R 300 CDI needs 9.5 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h and reaches a maximum speed of 215 km/h. The R 350 CDI needs from 0 to 100 km/h 7.6 seconds with 235 km/h maximum speed.

All models have a 7-speed automatic with shift paddles on the steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, heated leather steering wheel, and rain and light sensor. The multifunction display is also standard in the R-class. The R-Class faclift starts at 42,016 euro plus VAT.

You can see the R-Class – which is right in the picture – only from behind, but on the basis of the taillight and the red reflector in the rear bumper you recognize that this is the facelifted R-Class.

The facelifted R-Class ist planed for spring 2010. A possible date for public presentation, is the Autosalon in Geneva from March 4 to 14.

These are the findings of analyses carried out each year by the Saarbrücken-based market research institute Bähr & Fess Forecast on behalf of the motoring magazine “Auto Bild”. Mercedes-Benz vehicles are therefore generally have the highest value retention, and offer a significant economic advantage.

According to the residual value forecasts of the market researchers, the new E-Class will be the saloon with the highest resale value of all large coupés when it is four years old. The E 250 CDI will still command 55.5 percent of its current new value.

The C 220 CDI leads the field in the medium-size category, while the S 350 CDI is the winner in the luxury class, with forecast residual values of 53.5 and 49 percent respectively. The “value retention champion” among people carriers also bears the Mercedes star on its bonnet: the R 300 CDI is the leader in this segment, and is forecast to achieve a value of 47.5 percent after four years. Accordingly, four models from Mercedes-Benz carry the accolade “Value retention champions 2010″. The E, C, S and R-Class already occupied this peak position after analyses by the residual value specialists last year, and in previous years vehicles from Mercedes-Benz were regularly numbered amongst those with the highest value retention.

Each monitor has a separate DVD player, an SD card slot, a USB interface and a AV-IN connection, so it is possible to watch one film on both screens or to use each monitor separately. You can use for playback some various popular formats like MPEG4, DivX, MP3 or JPEG. The Rear Seat Entertainment System does not require any factory-fitted pre-installation. It can be retrofitted in many current vehicle models. It is now 30 years since production of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class began. The Stuttgart-based car maker first unveiled this robust off-roader to the public in 1979, since when it has delivered a total of some 200,000 units of the G-Class to customers around the world. Its still striking appearance, which has remained substantially unchanged throughout its 30-year career, plus outstanding engineering, has secured this Mercedes-Benz off-roader cult status in the automotive world, and made it one of the most coveted vehicles of its type on the market. With a production life of 30 years, the “G” is easily the longest-serving passenger car series in the more than 120-year history of Mercedes-Benz.

Viewed from the side, the new model is an intriguing proposition – with its clear proportions and a flawless cabriolet silhouette. Less turbulence, easier to use: AIRCAP® is a world-first. The AIRCAP® automatic draught-stop, which can be activated at the push of a button, greatly reduces turbulence in the interior of the new Mercedes E-Class Cabriolet. It is also much easier to implement and use than conventional draught-stops: there is no tricky installation, the two individual rear seats remain free and the Cabriolet’s flowing side lines remain uninterrupted.

With this success under its belt, Mercedes-Benz is now bringing its BlueTEC SUVs to the European market. This is a guaranteed home win. The three BlueTEC SUVs can be ordered immediately; deliveries will begin in September 2009. Celebrities are not the only ones to have their hearts captured by the low emission and economical yet powerful diesel models but also regular demanding customers. The turn in American tax policy has contributed to this. With the purchase of a Mercedes-Benz BlueTEC owners get the same tax benefits as for a hybrid car. For example, the GL equipped with BlueTEC technology can bring a savings of 1,370 euros. Mercedes-Benz will be offering the full range of BlueTEC models in Europe from fall 2009. In addition to the E 350 BlueTEC sedan, the range also includes three SUV vehicles – the ML 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC, GL 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC and R 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC. BlueTEC will additionally bolster the appeal of this vehicle category in Europe.

BlueTEC is a technology developed by Mercedes-Benz for effective reduction of diesel vehicle emissions, especially nitrogen oxides. This is the only exhaust gas constituent which has inherently higher levels in diesel engines than in gasoline engines. AdBlue®, a harmless, water-based urea solution, is injected into the exhaust flow, reducing up to 80 percent of the nitrogen oxides to harmless nitrogen and water in the downstream SCR catalytic converter. Moreover, the GL 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC, ML 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC and R 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC already meet the exhaust limits of the EU-6 Standard, which will become effective from 2014.

The powerful V6 diesel engine of the new BlueTEC SUV models shows that large SUVs are also capable of fuel economy and extremely low emissions. It delivers 155 kW/211 hp with a torque of 540 Newton meters, thus guaranteeing low consumption values as well as outstanding performance.

Stars and BlueTEC Vehicles
In addition to the successful actress Naomi Watts and her partner Liev Schreiber (known from “X-Men” and “The Manchurian Candidate”), BlueTEC drivers from the film and television industry also include William Baldwin, “Desperate Housewives” star Kyle MacLachlan, “Sex and the City” actress Kim Cattrall, Oscar nominee and Golden Globe winner Gary Oldman and “Phantom of the Opera” singer Emmy Rossum. “My ML 320 BlueTEC has all the power and luxury you’d expect of a Mercedes-Benz, plus the efficiency and low environmental impact of an economy or even hybrid vehicle”, says Emmy Rossum. “BlueTEC is really the best of both worlds.” World-famous singer, musician and environmental activist Sheryl Crow enjoys the advantages of the R-Class BlueTEC and echoes this view: “The newest clean diesel vehicles are eco-friendly and deserve as much attention as other gas alternatives like hybrids!”

In the world of music, pop star Gwen Stefani and her husband, musician Gavin Rossdale, also drive a Mercedes-Benz BlueTEC, as does singer Josh Kelley who is married to “Grey’s Anatomy” star Katherine Heigl. Other owners of a
Mercedes-Benz BlueTEC vehicle include Nicole Richie and Joel Madden, singer of the US band “Good Charlotte”. Seven-time Grammy award winner Alanis Morissette chose a fuel-efficient and low emission Mercedes-Benz BlueTEC to feature in her video for “Underneath”.

In its new model year, the world’s top-class luxury SUV will consume up to 8 percent less fuel (preliminary value) and be even more environmentally compatible.

Other outstanding features of the GL-Class will include excellent handling both on road and off road, exceptional roominess and the comfort of a luxury saloon. Beginning in autumn 2009, Mercedes-Benz will also offer the world’s most extensive range of SUV models equipped with especially efficient SCR exhaust gas treatment technology. Besides the GL 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC, customers will also have the ML 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC and R 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC models to choose from. The fuel-efficient, environmentally friendly trio of models already created a stir during their first sales year in the USA and they are sure to also boost the appeal of this vehicle class in Europe.

The GL-Class is becoming even more appealing
The GL-Class from Mercedes-Benz continues to hold the top position in the market segment of luxurious sports utility vehicles, but that’s not all: the latest model updates have made the premium off-roader even more attractive. In addition to introducing various technical modifications and innovations that particularly boost the fuel efficiency and environmental compatibility of the GL 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC and the GL 350 CDI 4MATIC featuring the BlueEFFICIENCY technology, the designers have made the vehicle’s striking body even more appealing.

The GL-Class’ expressive presence is further accentuated by modernised bumpers, redesigned chrome underbody protection at the front and the rear, a new radiator grille and fog lights/daytime driving lamps connected by a chrome bar. Other new features include light-alloy wheels measuring between 18 and 21 inches and reworked chrome tailpipes. The range of colours is supplemented by two new metallic paintjobs: “Tenorite Grey” and “Palladium Silver”. The tow bar is now hidden behind the rear apron and is swung out when needed.

The premium off-roader also offers the very best in safety. The safety features encompass a variety of assistance systems, including the innovative safety concept PRE-SAFE®, which automatically prepares the vehicle and its occupants for an impending collision by optimally activating the protective functions. The SUV’s Intelligent Light System (ILS) optimally distributes the light across the road in line with the respective driving situation and weather conditions. Standard features also include LED daytime driving lamps and taillights.

Luxurious interior with outstanding feel-good factor
The up to seven occupants of the GL-Class will enjoy an incredibly spacious interior that provides passengers with the pleasant ambience that is typical of Mercedes-Benz and comparable to that of the S-Class. The redesigned leather/ARTICO seats with contrasting trimming will be a real eye-catcher in the new model year, while the top-of-the-line GL 500 model will be available with exclusive nappa leather appointments. All vehicles will have a new range of instruments, a multifunction nappa leather steering wheel and crash-responsive NECK PRO comfort headrests for the driver and the front-seat passenger. The interior’s attractiveness is further enhanced by optional equipment such as two-tone leather appointments in black/cashmere beige or black/alpaca grey and the indirect ambient lighting employed in the S-Class. The range of interior trim options is augmented by the variant “anthracite-coloured poplar”.

GL 350 CDI 4MATIC with BlueEFFICIENCY technology provides lots of driving pleasure while reducing fuel consumption
In addition to the GL 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC featuring SCR technology, the GL‑Class is now available with BlueEFFICIENCY technology in the GL 350 CDI 4MATIC. This model consumes around 5 per cent less fuel than its predecessor without any change in performance. The vehicle’s V6 engine continues to generate 165 kW/224 hp and already provides its maximum torque of 510 Nm at 1,600 rpm. On average, the diesel engine consumes only 9.3 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres.

Like all other BlueEFFICIENCY models from Mercedes-Benz, the GL also features an extensive package of measures that help reduce fuel consumption. Besides the direct-injection diesel engine, these include the efficient 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission that switches to neutral when the vehicle is waiting at a traffic light or in a traffic jam in order to reduce engine load and fuel consumption. Fuel consumption is further reduced through the use of lower rolling resistance tyres. Aerodynamics have been improved by redesigning the radiator grille and adding more spoilers to the areas surrounding the front wheels. The GL’s fuel consumption is further reduced by the energy-saving electro-hydraulic power steering system. And thanks to a fuel consumption computer and a display showing current fuel consumption, GL drivers can always regulate their fuel consumption and, if necessary, adjust their driving behaviour.

Superlative drive comfort: GL 450 4MATIC, GL 500 4MATIC and GL 450 CDI 4MATIC equipped with V8 engines
Superlative power delivery and maximum drive comfort are among the special attributes of the two V8 petrol models, which also fulfil the EU5 standard. The GL 500’s 5.5-litre V8 engine delivers 285 kW/388 hp and a torque of 530 Nm. Within 6.5 seconds the vehicle can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h almost as quickly as a sports car, and the top speed of 240 km/h is also comparable. In the GL 450, the V8 petrol engine has a displacement of 4.6 litres, an output of 250 kW/340 hp and a maximum torque of 460 Nm. The vehicle accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.2 seconds and has a top speed of 235 km/h. The V8 diesel engine in the GL 450 CDI 4MATIC delivers 225 kW/306 hp, and its 700 Nm of torque create ideal conditions for achieving superior drive comfort.

Safe and agile both on and off the road
Besides featuring the innovative 4MATIC all-wheel drive system, the standard-fitted AIRMATIC air suspension, the high-precision direct steering system and the standard-fitted Adaptive Damping System (ADS), the imposing GL surprises customers with its impressive handling properties and ensures outstanding drive comfort and active safety. As a fully fledged off-roader, the GL performs well not only on the road but also when driving cross-country. The modified AIRMATIC system allows the vehicle to achieve a ground clearance of up to 307 millimetres. The Offroad-Pro technology package that is available as standard greatly improves manoeuvring in difficult terrain, thanks to the use of gear ratio reduction and multiple disc locks at the rear axle and the centre differential. The driver’s task is further simplified by additional electronic handling systems, such as Offroad ABS, Downhill Speed Regulation (DSR) and anti-stall assist.

BlueTEC campaign: R, ML and GL-Class now available in Europe with the world’s cleanest diesel technology
The GL 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC, ML 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC and R 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC boast impressive performance, high torque, great fuel efficiency and low emissions, which make them some of the world’s cleanest premium SUVs. The latter two models can now also be ordered in Europe, where they will become available this autumn. The vehicles’ environmental friendliness was confirmed by the readers of Bild am Sonntag and a panel of experts who together awarded BlueTEC the “Green Steering Wheel”. The commission already certified last year that this technology has the greatest ecological potential of all of the currently available environmentally friendly automotive innovations.

BlueTEC — the synonym for environmentally friendly vehicles in the USA and now also in Europe
The history of BlueTEC in Mercedes-Benz passenger vehicle models began in the USAin October 2006, when Mercedes-Benz launched a BlueTEC version of the E-Class saloon on the market to coincide with the introduction of low-sulphur diesel fuel. The vehicle immediately received great praise from customers and trade journalists alike and was voted the 2007 World Green Car. In the autumn of 2008, Mercedes-Benz added three new models to its range of BlueTEC vehicles: the R, ML and GL BlueTEC 4MATIC. These were the first diesel SUVs to meet the stringent emissions standards of all 50 US states. Besides the low emissions of the BlueTEC technology, US customers were impressed by the vehicles’ high fuel efficiency. The GL 320 BlueTEC 4MATIC, for example, consumes about 20 to 40 per cent less fuel than comparable petrol models, making it by far the most economical full-size luxury SUV in the USA.

Mercedes-Benz developed BlueTEC in order to effectively reduce the emissions
of diesel vehicles. The technology focuses particularly on nitrogen oxides, as they are the only emission constituent in diesels that inherently exceeds the equivalent figure for a petrol engine. It involves injecting a non-toxic aqueous carbamide solution known as AdBlueÓ into the exhaust gas flow. This releases ammonia. In the downstream SCRcatalyst system the ammonia then converts up to 80 per cent of the nitrogen oxides into the harmless products nitrogen and water. In addition, the GL 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC, ML 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC and R 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC already fulfil the emissions limits of the EU 6 standard, which won’t go into effect until 2014.

The powerful V6 diesel engine of the new BlueTEC SUVs demonstrates that full-size SUVs can also achieve high fuel efficiency along with low emissions. This engine delivers 155 kW/211 hp and provides a torque of 540 Nm. As a result, it not only guarantees low emissions and high fuel efficiency but also superlative driving performance.

Exclusive and extravagant: the R-Class “Grand Edition”
All engine and wheelbase versions of the R-Class (including the BlueTEC version) are also available in the especially extravagant “Grand Edition” equipment variant. This model, which also will become available in autumn 2009, will feature, among other things, exclusive 20-inch AMG bicolour light-alloy wheels as well as thermally insulated blue windows all-round. The vehicle’s special outfit is supplemented by bi-xenon headlamps with dynamic active light and cornering light functions, chrome-framed LED daytime driving lamps integrated into the front bumper and taillights in a dark sporty design. The interior features decorative wood trim made of anthracite-coloured poplar with chrome applications as well as the “Grand Edition” nameplate, the AMG ergonomic steering wheel with gearshift paddles, and sports pedals made of brushed stainless steel with rubber nobs. This equipment package can be ordered immediately for €3,300 plus VAT.
