Mercedes-Benz’s SUV models are celebrating another milestone. Since the launch of Mercedes-Benz’s first sports utility vehicle – the G-Class – over 30 years ago, more than two million G-Class, M-Class, R-Class, GL-Class and GLK-Class models have been delivered to customers.

Dr. Joachim Schmidt, Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing Mercedes-Benz Cars: “Our entire SUV family is extremely popular among our customers, particularly in the USA and in its second-largest market China. With the launch of our first sports utility vehicle – the G‑Class – more than 30 years ago, we entered a segment in which we are now very successful with a total of five models. The SUVs today are an important pillar of Mercedes-Benz’s growth and have achieved a new sales record in every month since July 2010. The new Mercedes-Benz M-Class, which has enjoyed fantastic customer response to date, will give sales a further boost.”

In November 2011, Mercedes-Benz SUVs achieved another monthly sales record with deliveries of 25,552 models (+23.4%). From January through November, a total of 221,518 sports utility vehicles have been delivered worldwide (+24.3%), more than ever before in this period. The successful run-out of the M-Class was particularly noteworthy, as was the excellent start of its new models in the U.S. A new peak was set by the GLK, whose deliveries are at a record high since the beginning of the year (+25.6%). To meet the strong demand on the Chinese market, the small SUV is being produced locally in China since early December. The other model series have also developed positively in the year to date with significant increases in sales. R-Class sales jumped by 50.3 per cent, the G-Class recorded growth of 30.9 per cent, GL sales climbed by 28.9 per cent, and deliveries of the M-Class were up 15.8% despite the model change. In the coming year, the new GL and the new generations of the GLK and the G-Class will generate additional demand in the SUV segment.

The SUV models account for around one-fifth of global Mercedes-Benz sales. By far the largest market for the SUV family as well as the M-, GLK-, and GL-Class are the United States. The second largest market for the SUVs is China, followed by Germany. The classic sports utility vehicle, the G-Class, is most popular in its domestic market Germany, while the R-Class is most in demand in China.

The latest star of the Mercedes-Benz SUV family is the third generation of the M-Class, which was launched last November. One of its strongest features is its outstanding energy efficiency. As the most fuel-efficient SUV in its segment, the M-Class became the first vehicle in its class to receive the prestigious TÜV (Technical Control Board) environmental certificate – just in time for its launch. The strengths of the permanent 4-wheel-drive premium SUV also include excellent safety features and well-balanced driving comfort with strong driving dynamics both on- and off-road. Thanks to its outstanding safety systems, the M-Class was recognized as the best vehicle in its segment and awarded the top five star rating under the European NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) for excellent occupant protection.

The new M-Class is the top model in its segment when it comes to value retention. Just recently it was recognized by “Focus Online” and “Bähr & Fess Forecast” as one of the best performers in terms of residual values in 2015. The ML 250 BlueTEC can still yield 55 per cent of its new value as a four-year-old used car.

The Mercedes-Benz M-Class was also awarded the “Golden Steering Wheel 2011” by readers of German “Bild am Sonntag” and “Auto Bild”. The other SUV models are also extremely popular among customers. This year, the longest-standing Mercedes-Benz model series, the G-Class, was crowned “SUV of the Year” for the eighth time. This major award is voted by the readers of the German “Off Road” magazine. Meanwhile, the readers of “AutoBild Allrad” gave the G-Class the victory in the “Off-road vehicles and SUVs over €60,000” category, followed by the GL-Class.

With the InCar Hotspot data signals are received via the vehicle’s aerial. The InCar Hotspot is a WLAN router, specially designed for in-car use. In conjunction with a data-enabled SIM card, it establishes a wireless internet connection even when the vehicle is in motion. Up to four WLAN end devices (for example laptop, smartphone, iPod touch) can be connected to the internet at the same time. The Mercedes-Benz InCar Hotspot supports the high-speed transmission standard HSDPA, plus UMTS and GSM/EDGE. The InCar Hotspot is installed in the load compartment. Part number for the InCar Hotspot-Kit is A204 900 5705.

As with the 4MATIC system’s set-up on a dry or wet road, the directional stability and, therefore, the active safety of the 4MATIC models are paramount at all times when wintry conditions prevail, too. The mechanical principle of the 4MATIC system featuring a 45:55 torque split between the front and rear axles and the multi-disc limited-slip centre differential with a basic locking torque of 50 Newton metres offer all the right ingredients.

This basic design enables high levels of traction, firstly because the dynamic shift in axle load toward the rear axle that occurs during acceleration is harnessed to deliver more drive torque to the rear wheels. Secondly, the multi-disc differential lock is also able to shift the drive torque between the front and rear axles, varying the split as the road conditions dictate. Consequently, intervention by the ESP, 4ETS or ASR electronic control systems can be delayed for as long as possible and the bulk of the drive torque converted into tractive power, even on slippery roads. All control system interventions go virtually unnoticed, yet drivers still know straight away if they are driving on the limit, as a yellow warning symbol will flash in the instrument cluster. This serves as a prompt to adapt the driving style to the road conditions.

The drive mechanism’s permanently engaged design offers key advantages over other systems that first need to diagnose a lack of grip before activating the all-wheel drive. The 4MATIC will have already made use of this valuable time to start transmitting drive torque via the wheels to the road.

All-wheel drive is not a substitute for winter tyres
Like any other all-wheel drive system, the 4MATIC has to abide by the laws of driving physics. The fundamental rule is that a tyre is only able to transfer a certain level of overall force to the road surface. If a particularly high degree of longitudinal force is required during acceleration or braking, for example, the available lateral force is reduced. When cornering, the reverse applies: now a large amount of lateral force is required to keep the vehicle on course, while the longitudinal force potential is restricted. The engineers’ skill in designing the drive mechanism and fine-tuning the control systems lies in their ability to exploit these correlations in such a way as to ensure the best possible handling characteristics under all conditions. The frictional coefficient µ describes the physical grip between the tyres and the ground. This figure is high on a dry road (µ = 0.9) and low on a snow-covered road (µ = 0.3).

Despite all the engineers’ efforts, it is ultimately the drivers themselves who determine how safe they are out on the road. They should always adapt their driving style in accordance with the wintry conditions and ensure that their vehicle is suitably equipped; winter tyres are absolutely essential here.

Pulling away with ease on ice and snow
When starting off in wintry conditions, certain road surface conditions are automatically detected and the interventions of the 4ETS electronic traction control system adjusted so as to achieve the greatest possible acceleration while minimising wheel slip, ensuring optimum directional stability in the process. This strategy also allows the vehicle to pull away under the most adverse conditions, such as when one side of the vehicle is on an icy slope (µ-split) or both wheels on either the front or rear axle have limited grip (µ-jump).

When starting off on µ-split, one side of the vehicle is on snow or ice and the other on asphalt. This means there are major differences in the coefficient of friction between the left and right-hand side of the vehicle. On all vehicles with open axle differentials, the wheel with the smallest friction coefficient limits the maximum transferable drive power. If the drive power exceeds the maximum transferable power, the wheels on snow or ice will start to spin and the vehicle would be unable to start off.

4ETS instantly detects this situation and prevents the wheels from spinning by building up exactly the right amount of pressure in the wheel brakes. As the wheel with the higher friction coefficient is now braced by the brake force at the wheel with the smaller friction coefficient, the 4MATIC model starts to move. After pulling away, the wheel characteristics are closely observed and the brake pressure regulated in such a way that, as far as possible, there is no difference in speed between the individual wheels. The braking force applied by 4ETS effectively simulates a higher coefficient of friction on the side of the road covered with ice or snow; ideally, this will match the coefficient of friction on the asphalt side. This produces an optimal inter-wheel locking effect at the axle differentials, resulting in the maximum possible acceleration on µ-split surfaces.

Starting off on “µ-jump” surfaces – where one of the vehicle’s axles is entirely on ice or snow and the other on asphalt – is hampered by the large differences in friction coefficient between the front and rear wheels. On vehicles with an open inter-axle differential, the axle with the lower coefficient of friction determines the transferable drive power. Whilst the multi-disc differential lock with its basic locking torque of 50 Newton metres does have a balancing effect, it is unable to compensate for these extreme differences in friction coefficient. Here again, both wheels on the axle with the lower coefficient of friction start to spin if the drive power exceeds the maximum transferable drive power at this friction coefficient. The 4ETS resolves this problem by instantly detecting spinning wheels and braking them. In this way, the braked axle with the smaller friction coefficient braces the axle with the higher friction coefficient – and the 4MATIC model starts to move.

Assured handling on wintry roads
On twisting roads covered with snow and ice, vehicle stability is primarily controlled by the 4ETS system’s acceleration skid control function regulating engine torque. The 4ETS control thresholds are adjusted according to the driving situation based on the vehicle’s longitudinal and lateral dynamic readings as continuously measured by the ESP® sensor system. To prevent the vehicle from tail-skidding, the longitudinal force when cornering must be controlled by means of engine torque regulation in such a way that there are sufficient reserves of lateral force at all times. In order to comply with this physical correlation, when cornering on road surfaces with a low friction coefficient vehicle stability is mainly controlled by the ESP and ASR acceleration skid control systems intervening to ensure that there is always sufficient lateral force in reserve.

Initially, only enough engine torque to allow the tyres to develop sufficient lateral force is transmitted to the wheels on the outside of the bend. If the ASR control function cannot restore directional stability, the ESP system will intervene by applying the brakes to stabilise the vehicle.

In contrast to the control mechanisms triggered when cornering, considerably more longitudinal force can be provided when accelerating in a straight line, as the tyres hardly have to transfer any lateral force. What is important here is that the tyres can work in the optimum µ-slip curve range. In order to achieve this, the control thresholds for engine torque regulation are raised in this driving situation. When driving on snow-covered or icy roads with low friction coefficients, the multi-disc differential lock in the transfer case takes effect, producing an inter-axle locking torque of 50 Newton metres in the powertrain. This locking effect boosts traction considerably without having any negative impact on the control systems. When the final-drive ratios are factored in, this allows 150 Newton metres to be delivered to the wheels.

In certain wintry conditions it may become necessary to deactivate the control systems using the “ESP OFF” switch. This is the case where high slip values are required at the wheels – when powering out of deep snow, for instance, either with or without snow chains. Even in “ESP OFF” mode, drivers can still count on the full support of the control systems when braking. Once back on a road surface with a normal covering of snow, the control systems should be reactivated again.

A new option for the 2011 GLK, the AMG Sport Package includes deeper front and rear aprons, 20-inch, five-twin-spoke AMG wheels, LED daytime running lights and aluminum roof rails. Other options include the convenient Keyless-Go system, in which the doors are unlocked, and the car starts at the push of a button, with the key still in a pocket or purse. SIRIUS real-time traffic for the GPS navigation system is also available.

Just the Right Size for Today’s Family
Launched in the United States to rave reviews in 2009, the GLK appears to be a smaller version of the GL at first glance, but a closer look reveals a modern interpretation of the iconic G-Class. In sharp contrast to the relatively soft forms of similar-sized vehicles, the striking, angular nose of the GLK sets it apart from the competition.

From its projection headlights and steeply-raked windshield to the integrated rear spoiler on its tightly styled roof section, the bold profile of the GLK suggests power and agility. At the same time, the GLK is just the right size for today’s family, whether it’s parking in town while running errands or making a cross-country trip.

Agility and Comfort
Smaller and lighter than its well-known SUV siblings, the Mercedes-Benz GLK brings a special combination of agility and comfort to the SUV market. Like nearly all Mercedes-Benz passenger vehicles, the GLK features four-wheel independent suspension worthy of a sports sedan.

Standard Agility Control suspension provides the benefits of both soft and stiff shock absorbers. Each twin-tube shock absorber is fitted with a hydraulic by-pass piston that acts like a very soft shock absorber to effectively dampen road noise and tire vibration. However, over bumpy or uneven roads, the by-pass piston is out of the picture, preserving the outstanding steering and handling response of a stiffer shock absorber.

With respectable ground clearance for off-road driving, its standard roof rack and optional running boards of the GLK emphasize its versatile SUV character. Its powertrain features a 3.5-liter V6 engine, a sophisticated seven-speed automatic transmission and available 4MATIC full-time four-wheel-drive. Standard equipment also includes 19-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, roof rails, privacy glass and chrome detail touches inside and out.

Impressive Interior Design and Safety Technology
The GLK broadens and extends the Mercedes-Benz sport utility line with cutting-edge engine and available four-wheel-drive technology packaged in a stylish vehicle that’s the perfect size for today’s busy families. Inside, the eye-catching SUV has all the impressive design ambiance and safety technology of Mercedes-Benz cars.

A High-Performance Instrument Cluster
The instrument cluster features three analog gauges that show engine speed, road speed, fuel level and coolant temperature. A 4.5-inch display in the center of the speedometer is linked to a 12-button multi-function steering wheel that can call up a variety of helpful information such as phone and audio system information – radio station, CD track or MP3 playlist.

Similar to the popular system launched on the top-of-the-line S-Class sedan and CL coupe, an electronic controller on the lower console works like a computer mouse to provide easy, quick operation of many functions that previously required scores of separate buttons and switches. By turning and pressing the aluminum controller, menus and sub-menus on the center-console display are displayed and selected for the audio system as well as the optional navigation system and integrated phone. The controller is also linked to the rocker switches on the multifunction steering wheel.

Concert-Hall Audio
Standard equipment in the new GLK is an 80-watt Audio 20 system. In addition to its eight speakers, the Audio 20 includes a single CD slot, telephone keypad, a MP3 plug in the glove box and a Bluetooth interface. Optionally available is a harman/kardon LOGIC7 Dolby Digital/DTS 5.1 discrete multi-channel, surround-sound system, delivering 600 watts of true studio sound experience. The LOGIC7 system comes with 11 surround-sound speakers and a sub-woofer.

As part of the Multimedia package, the GLK includes a MusicRegister feature, which enables CD “ripping” (saving) to a six-gigabyte hard drive that can store up to 1,000 tracks from a CD. A Gracenote database automatically identifies each track with its title, artist, album name and other information. The audio system can also play tracks stored on a DVD or PC memory card.

COMAND Navigation
The optional COMAND navigation system features a seven-inch color TFT display screen in the center console (the standard Audio 20 system has a five-inch display) and a hard drive with map data covering all of North America. In addition to the high-resolution map display at the top of the center console, next-turn navigation instructions can also be shown in the instrument cluster central display.

Bluetooth Integrated Phones
Bluetooth-enabled phones connect wirelessly to a standard hands-free system, which facilitates safe cell phone use while driving. The audio system is automatically muted during calls, and phone conversations make use of the audio speakers and two microphones built into the rear-view mirror. Call lists and phone address books can be shown on the standard central dash display or the optional COMAND screen.

Mercedes-Benz Safety is Standard
The GLK comes standard with ESP® stability control, ABS anti-lock brakes, two-stage adaptive air bags for the driver and front passenger, driver’s knee air bag, seat-mounted side and pelvic air bags in front, curtain side air bags and adaptive belt tensioners and belt force limiters. In addition, NECK-PRO active front head restraints move forward nearly two inches and upward by about an inch in the event of a severe rear collision, helping to support the head and reduce the likelihood of whiplash injuries. A rollover sensor can activate the belt tensioner and curtain air bags if the vehicle senses an imminent rollover.

No less than three Mercedes model series at once have achieved the highest rating of five stars in the more stringent EuroNCAP test – the E-Class, GLK and C-Class.

“We are very pleased about this good result. It confirms the correctness of our real-life safety concept, even in standardised rating crash tests,” says Prof. Rodolfo Schöneburg, Head of Passive Safety at Mercedes-Benz Cars. In line with the claim that ‘One star is sufficient’, Mercedes-Benz has always taken a comprehensive safety approach that reflects what actually happens in real accidents. “Real Life Safety is far more than performance in standardised crash tests or the number of onboard airbags. The innovative PRE-SAFE® system for example, which improves safety shortly before an accident occurs, is not assessed at all by EuroNCAP,” Schöneburg explains.

During the course of its development to date, the new E-Class has successfully come through over 150 high-speed crash tests and more than 5000 realistic crash simulations. These not only included the various impact configurations prescribed for rating tests and worldwide operating approvals, but also the in-house, Mercedes crash tests derived from accident research findings.

Safety has a long tradition at Mercedes-Benz: in August 1939 the safety pioneer Béla Barényi started working in Sindelfingen. One of his inventions was the principle of the crumple zone, which first entered series production at Mercedes-Benz as a groundbreaking innovation in 1959 and remains a basic safety feature of all modern cars to this day. With the help of its in-house accident research function, which commenced operations in 1969, Mercedes engineers have developed several milestones in passenger car safety. Among them are the airbag and PRE‑SAFE®. In the anniversary year of 2009, Mercedes-Benz used the ESF 2009 research vehicle to reveal what its safety specialists are currently working on.

The EuroNCAP organisation (European New Car Assessment Programme) has made its test conditions more stringent this year. All the individual tests are separately rated and consolidated to produce an overall result. Front occupant protection accounts for 50 percent of the result, child and pedestrian protection for 20 percent each, and the new test criterion of driver assistance systems for 10 percent. One of these is ESP®, which has been standard equipment in Mercedes-Benz passenger cars for many years. The test programme now also includes seat tests simulating a rear-end collision, allowing an assessment of the whiplash injury risk to the cervical vertebrae.

The tried-and-trusted Audio 20 radio retains its full range of functions: it features a CD player (with MP3 capability), an FM/MW/SW and LW tuner with automatic station search, an RDS function (for FM reception), direct frequency input using the buttons on the centre console and a 4×20-watt amplifier. Navigation 20 is a fully-integrated plug & play solution, which adds various features to the Audio 20.

While one car boasts outstanding driving performance and high fuel efficiency, the other offers high fuel efficiency and good handling.

What is the difference between the two? The sporty handling dynamics set the tone in the all-wheel drive GLK 250 CDI 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY: The modern, four-cylinder diesel with 150 kW (204 hp) and an impressive 500 Nm of torque guarantees top acceleration and flexibility. In fact, this model has the most powerful four-cylinder diesel engine in the SUV world. The rear-wheel drive GLK 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY with the familiar 125 kW (170 hp) diesel engine, on the other hand, impresses with even better fuel economy (consumption as low as 6.0 l/100 km) while at the same time delivering great performance.

The new models underscore the leading position of the distinctive yet compact GLK. Whereas the GLK 250 CDI 4MATIC featuring permanently engaged all-wheel drive, 7G-TRONIC transmission and the segment’s most powerful four-cylinder diesel engine augments the world of top-of-the-range compact SUVs, the GLK 220 CDI with rear-wheel drive and six-speed manual transmission offers maximum fuel economy. It consumes only between 6.0 and 6.4 litres of diesel fuel per 100 kilometres and combines these low consumption values with good performance. The rear-wheel drive vehicle accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 8.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 205 km/h. The GLK 250 CDI4MATIC completes the sprint to the 100 km/h mark in 7.9 seconds and doesn’t stop accelerating until reaching 213 km/h. This sports car-like performance does not come at the typical cost of higher consumption. The diesel consumes only 6.7 litres per 100 kilometres on average.

GLK 250 CDI 4MATIC: The fun yet frugal power SUV
The GLK 250 CDI 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY brings the world’s most powerful four-cylinder diesel engine for an SUV to the Mercedes-Benz range. The new 2143 cc diesel engine with direct fuel injection produces 150 kW/204 hp and 500 Nm of torque in the GLK for outstanding performance. Just as impressive as the sprint times and the top speed is the GLK’s top-gear acceleration. Thanks to its high torque, which is already present at 1600 rpm, the GLK 250 CDI 4MATIC accelerates powerfully when overtaking, requiring only 7.0 seconds for the sprint from 80 to 120 km/h. In spite of its great performance, this GLK model is very economical to drive, consuming only 6.7 litres of diesel fuel on average per 100 kilometres (combined NEDC consumption, preliminary value). This makes the GLK significantly more fuel efficient than comparable models in this performance class. The vehicle produces CO2 emissions of 176 grams per kilometre.Furthermore, it not only meets the EU5 emissions standard but also has the potential to fulfil the EU6 limits as well as the BIN 5 requirements in the USA.

Diesel engine with advanced common-rail technology
One of the hallmarks of the new diesel engine in the GLK 250 CDI 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY is the increased maximum rail pressure of 2000 bar. This increase in pressure potential is a prerequisite for increasing engine output and torque while at the same time significantly reducing untreated emissions. Newly developed piezo injectors take advantage of the fact that piezoceramics change their crystal structure – and therefore their thickness – in a matter of nanoseconds (one nanosecond = one billionth of a second) when electrical voltage is applied. The new injectors are equipped with a stack of thin piezoceramic layers (called the “piezo stack”) to enable them to achieve a sufficient overall stroke from the very small stroke per layer. The injector needle is actuated directly, so that the fuel injection can be adjusted even more precisely in line with the current load and engine speed situation. Another key factor behind the low emissions, low fuel consumption at full load and peak output is the ignition pressure of 200 bars, which puts the four-cylinder diesel at the head of the field when it comes to diesel engines for passenger vehicles.

A two-stage supercharging system comprising a small high-pressure (HP) turbocharger and a large low-pressure (LP) turbocharger ensures that the optimum charging pressure is always available. The two turbochargers are connected in series, and each has a turbine and a compressor driven by this turbine for the combustion air. The HP turbine is located directly at the exhaust manifold and initially allows exhaust gas to flow through it, causing it to rotate at up to 215,000 revolutions per minute. The HP turbine housing features an integral bypass duct, which can be opened or closed by means of a wastegate triggered by a vacuum unit. If the flap is closed, the entire exhaust stream flows through the HP turbine so that the exhaust gas energy is initially available to drive the HP turbine. This allows the optimal boost pressure to be developed even at low engine speeds. As the engine speed increases, the wastegate opens, distributing the exhaust gas energy to the turbines with optimum efficiency. Downstream of the HP turbine, the two exhaust gas streams reconverge, and the remaining exhaust gas energy drives the LP turbine at a maximum speed of up to 185,000 revolutions per minute. At intermediate engine speeds, the wastegate of the HP turbine is opened so wide that the HP turbine ceases to perform any appreciable work. This allows the full exhaust gas energy to be directed with low losses into the LP turbine, which then does all of the turbine work.
The two compressors are likewise connected in series and are in addition connected to a bypass duct. The combustion air from the air filter first flows through the low-pressure compressor, where it is compressed as a function of the LP turbine’s driving power. The compressed air then flows into the high-pressure compressor, which is coupled to the HP turbine, where it undergoes further compression for a genuine two-stage supercharging process.

The key benefit of this intelligent, on-demand control is the improved cylinder charging and, consequently, high torque even at low engine speeds. What’s more, fuel consumption is reduced. During normal operation, the advantages of this concept can be seen in the harmonious driving characteristics with no turbo lag, a good torque curve across the entire engine speed range, spontaneous throttle response and noticeably improved performance. As a logical supplement to the turbocharger system, Mercedes-Benz installs a larger intercooler that reduces the temperature of the compressed and heated air by as much as 140 degrees Celsius so that a larger volume of air can enter the combustion chambers.

The newly developed exhaust gas recirculation valve (EGR valve) works like a rotary disc valve and precisely controls the quantity of fresh air and recirculated exhaust air to effectively reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides.

Sacrifice without detriment: The GLK 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY with rear-wheel drive and six-speed manual transmission
The powerful, yet economical four-cylinder diesel engine in the GLK 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY is another unit from this same generation of engines. It produces 125 kw/170 hp and, depending on the equipment level, consumes only between 6.0 and 6.4 litres of diesel fuel per 100 kilometres (combined NEDC consumption, preliminary value). CO2 emissions are from 158 to 168 grams per kilometre. Not only does it meet the current EU5 emissions standard, this version also has the potential to fulfil the EU6 limits as well as the BIN 5 requirements in the USA.

In combination with a tried and tested six-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive, the engine of the GLK 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY exudes a lot of power and responds to the driver’s commands with a great deal of agility. It boasts good pulling power and, like the more powerful variant, is extremely smooth running for a four-cylinder diesel engine. In addition to good performance, the engine generates an impressive torque at low engine speeds: Peak torque of 400 Nm is available over a wide rev range from 1400 to 2800 rpm, making it possible to drive very fuel efficiently at low engine speeds in everyday driving situations. The rear-wheel drive vehicle sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 8.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 205 km/h.

The GLK 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY is also available with the 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic transmission as an option.

BlueEFFICIENCY: Efficient measures for reducing fuel consumption
Like all BlueEFFICIENCY models from Mercedes-Benz, the two new GLK models also feature an extensive package of measures that help to reduce fuel consumption. Measures besides the diesel engine with direct injection and the low-friction powertrain include weight savings achieved through the use of high strength and ultra high strength steels in the bodyshell and weight-optimised alloy wheels. Aerodynamic side mirrors and underbody panels lower the air resistance, and newly developed 235/60 R 17 V tyres reduce rolling resistance. A regulated fuel pump and the energy-saving electric power steering system further reduce the GLK’s fuel consumption. Thanks to a fuel-consumption computer and a display showing current fuel consumption, GLK drivers can check their fuel consumption at any time and adjust their driving behaviour accordingly.

New equipment details for the new model year
New equipment options are available for the distinctive compact SUV. These include convenience features such as KEYLESS GO or – in combination with the COMAND APS multimedia system – a reversing camera with static help lines that make it easier to manoeuvre in tight quarters. Effective immediately, all COMAND infotainment systems are able to receive digital radio (DAB). Passive safety was further improved by the standard pelvisbag*, which provide additional protection to the pelvis in the event of a collision. The crash-responsive exit assistant is a new function of the Memory equipment package that makes it easier to exit the vehicle after an accident by automatically moving the power-adjustable steering wheel to its highest position. The optional Intelligent Light System (ILS) now includes LED* daytime running lights, and 19 inch winter wheels have been added to the portfolio for the coming cold season.

Customers can choose ARTICO, a particularly robust, yet breathable synthetic leather for the interior of the GLKs.Also available is the luxurious designo line of two-colour leather appointments in black/light brown and black/corteccia.

Spring 2009 sees the GLK receive not only a number of new items of equipment but also a special distinction: compact and distinctive, it is the first Mercedes-Benz SUV model family to receive the sought-after Environmental Certificate in accordance with ISO standard 14062.

In awarding the certificate, the independent specialists at the TÜV test organisation have once again recognised the company’s commitment to environmental protection, as also laid down in the policy guidelines for the entire Daimler Group. These require the premium manufacturer to go much further than merely considering the environmental effects which a vehicle has while it is actually in use. Instead, the entire lifecycle from development through the production process and the use phase right up to disposal is examined and optimised. The Environmental Certificate is based on a complete life cycle assessment of the GLK which comprises some 40,000 separate processes. In addition to the GLK, the A, B, C and S-Class models have already been awarded the TÜV Süd Environmental Certificate.

The certification to ISO standard 14062 applies to all GLK models. The Mercedes-Benz GLK 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY was used as the basis for calculating a range of parameters including the energy requirement and emissions over a distance of 200,000 kilometres. The results for the compact SUV were extremely positive: it consumed just 6.7 litres of diesel per hundred kilometres (176 g CO2/km) and performed to a higher standard than that required by the EU 5 emission limits which come into force in September 2009. Factors optimised through the BlueEFFICIENCY strategy include aerodynamics, rolling resistance, vehicle weight and energy management. What’s more, all GLK models are also compatible with future fuels. They are already designed to meet the requirements of EU plans to increase the biofuel content. A bioethanol component of 10 percent (E10) is permissible for petrol engines while diesel engines are able to run without any reservation on fuel with a 10-percent biofuel component, comprising 7 percent biodiesel (B7 FAME) and 3 percent hydrogenated vegetable oil.

Design for Environment: environmental protection starts on the drawing board
The “Design for Environment” (DfE) concept was integrated in the complex development process for the GLKright from the start. Special DfE teams made up of engineers from a wide range of disciplines – such as life cycle assessment, dismantling and recycling planning, materials and process engineering, as well as design and production – ensured compliance with the defined environmental objectives. The integration of DfE in the product development process ensured that environmental aspects were considered from the very earliest stage of development. As Dr Herbert Kohler, Chief Environmental Officer of Daimler AG, points out: “The environmental quality of a vehicle is determined by more than its fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. It’s necessary to look at the entire life cycle from development through production and use to disposal. This is a striking example of Mercedes-Benz’s comprehensive commitment to the environment. The Environmental Certificate for the GLK confirms the success of our strategy in this important area.

Public access to the Environmental Certificate and a detailed presentation of it is available in the “Life Cycle” documentation series at www.mercedes-benz.com.

Comprehensive environmental concept making consistent use of secondary and renewable raw materials
The GLK already meets the requirement for a 95-percent recoverability rate which is applicable from 01.01.2015. Even at the development stage, care was taken to ensure that certain thermoplastic components – such as bumpers, wheel arch linings, side member, underbody and engine compartment panels – could be segregated and disassembled easily. In the GLK, 30 components with a total weight of 41 kilograms contain a proportion of high-grade recycled plastics. These include wheel arch linings, cable ducts and underbody panelling. As far as possible, the secondary raw materials used are obtained from vehicle-related waste flows, one example being the front wheel arch linings which are made from recycled vehicle components.

A total of 27 components with a combined weight of 20.7 kilograms are made with renewable raw materials. These components are to be found principally in the interior of the GLK. The seat upholstery contains some 15 percent pure sheep’s wool. Olive coke is used in the activated charcoal filters which prevent hydrocarbon emissions resulting from fuel evaporation and are self-regenerating during vehicle operation.

New equipment features and model designations for the GLK
A number of new items of equipment are available for the distinctive, compact SUV. These include comfort and convenience features such as KEYLESS GO or – in combination with the COMAND APS multimedia system – a reversing camera with a display showing static guide lines to assist with manoeuvring. Inside the GLK, customers can now choose particularly hard-wearing yet also breathable ARTICO man-made leather. What’s more, the luxurious designo line is also available with two-tone leather appointments in a choice of black/light brown and black/corteccia.

Spring 2009 sees the GLKmodel designations change in accordance with the other Mercedes-Benz model lines. The two versions with a V6 petrol engine now have the model designations “GLK 300 4MATIC (formerly GLK 280 4MATIC) and GLK 350 4MATIC (unchanged) and, like the GLK 220 CDI 4MATIC with BlueEFFICIENCY technology, meet the requirements of the EU 5 standard which comes into force in September 2009. The second diesel version, the GLK 350 CDI 4MATIC (formerly GLK 320 CDI 4MATIC), complies with the EU 4 standard.

In a classy silver look, incorporated 3D structures invoke bull bars and form an elegant transverse web, which flows around the fog lights. The triangular profile in the corners of the bumpers is also reminiscent of
the off-road origin of the car.

They represent the visual link between the indicated underride protection elements on the front and the rear, as well as the Lorinser side sills. In order to fully underline the bullish character of the bodywork, these add-on parts have large, quadratic incisions as a common stylistic feature.

The rear view in particular exudes pure energy. With it the Lorinser designers have succeeded in making the wedge-shaped knick in the lid of the boot clearly visible again with their spoiler bumper, so that the styling looks especially muscular. Here the U-shaped swage lines on the edges play just as important a role as the four powerful, shiny round exhaust pipes. In pairs they flank the silver middle section of the spoiler together with a sports grill insert. The dynamic Lorinser light-alloy wheels, which are available in diverse designs for the GLK, form a conscious counterpart to the rather Cuban-style bodywork and its components.

The RS 8, for example, is particularly well harmonised to the style with its classical turbine blade look. It is not just evidence of the timeless skill of its designers, but also the fact that the GLK can also be extremely agile with its city proportions and strong engine. As a result it can excellently outmanoeuvre not just prejudices.

For the U.S. market, Mercedes-Benz (MBUSA) has produces a new spot for the GLK, the sake of which we want to publish here. The name: Narrow. This time, the tv spot is unfortunately, unspectacular and without a lot of actors, only a GLK which drives through close and very tight, roads.
